Giovanni Bria, born in Ruti, Zurich, studied piano, organ, horn, double bass and conducting with Johannes Fuchs and Paul Muller at the Conservatoires of Zurich and Geneva. When a student he was engaged as organist and choir leader. He attended the master class of Louis Hiltbrand in Geneva and completed his piano studies by receiving the 'Premier Prix de Virtuosité' with honours. After having spent three years as a repetiteur and assistent to Jean Meylan at the Geneva City Theatre Giovanni Bria was appointed choir conductor and music director at the reopened Grand Theatre de Genève. There he built up the opera choir, founded an ensemble of young soloists and worked with well-known conductors (notably Ansermet, Erede, Fournet, Pretre, Schippers, Molinari-Pradelli, Ludwig, Swarowsky) and stage-directors (Wieland Wagner, Buckwitz, Graf, Erlo). He was repeatedly engaged by Wieland Wagner as assistant conductor of Bohm, Cluytens, Suitner and Heger for the Festspiele in Bayreuth. After that Bernard Lefort offered him the position of music coordinator, choir conductor and director of studies at the opera of Marseille. He completed his symphonic repertoire at the international courses for conductors in Hilversum, Netherlands. He was soon engaged at the Theatre of Nantes, France, where he conducted a wide range of operas, operettas and ballets (Carmen, Faust, Mireille, Tosca, Perlenfischer, Gisele, Catulli Carmina, Il Combattimento di Tancredi e di Clorinda, Ciboulette). At the Festival of Angouleme, France, he was entrusted with the production of some highly interesting works like Ravel's 'Spanish Hour', Bartok's 'Duke Bluebeard's Castle' and Mozart's 'Mass in C minor'. Giovanni Bria conducted the Sudwestdeutsche Philharmonie, the Czech Symphony Orchestra Prague and other orchestras in different works by Mozart (e.g. Haffner Symphony, Violin Concerto in A, arias for soprano and orchestra), in the 9th Symphony by Dvorak (New World Symphony) as well as in various compositions by de Falla, Bizet, Bruch, Mussorgsky, Ravel, Bach, Weber, Rossini. Giovanni Bria studied musicology and comparative literature at the University of Zurich and completed his studies with a M.A. degree. He was a contributor to the American Verdi scholar Hans Busch ot the Indiana University of Bloomington USA for several years. As a pianist he accompanied a number of well-known singers. His concerts with Dame Gwyneth Jones (notably at the Prague Spring Festival) and with Nicolai Gedda (at the Staatsoper Berlin and Musikverein Wien) were particularly successful. Together with the Chinese singer Yi-Ping Li Bria has just completed an acclaimed concert tour in Romania. Further concerts have been planned for 1999. Recently Giovanni Bria has successfully conducted The Hermitage Symphony Orchestra in The Hermitage Theatre in St. Petersbourg on two occasions. The programme included the Cello Concerto No. 1 by a Swiss composer Joachim Raff as well as his choral ouverture 'A Solid Fort'. At the moment a CD with both cello concertos by Raff is being produced in Melodia Studio in St. Petersbourg. Besides his various artistic activities Giovanni Bria is the founder and organizer of the Summer Music Festival at the Lake of Zurich.
