Daniele Abbado studied at the School of Dramatic Art of the Piccolo Teatro di Milano and graduated in philosophy. He began his career as a director in 1988, extending progressively his interest in stage dramaturgy, TV direction and multimedia shows.

His first stagings include Golem with the actor-singer Moni Ovadia represented from 1991 to 1993 in Milan, Berlin, Rome, New York, Cracow and Paris. In these years he also staged productions for the Collettivo Teatro Festival in Parma and of works of Rossini and Donizetti in Turin and Lucerne. Highlights of Daniele Abbado's video directions and multimedia shows are Che Guevara in 1989 and 1990 for Rai Tre - Fonit Cetra in Havana, Alexander Nevskij in collaboration with Studio Azzurro for the Austrian ORF and Rai Tre and staged live in Wien and Rome, La casa dei suoni for Sony Classical, Fiume di musica for the opening of Rome Europe Festival.

Subsequently his work has taken a new search direction, focusing on dialogue and on the use of more than one languages. This project has brought him to productions such as Frammenti sull'Apocalisse, written with Roberto Andò and Nicola Sani and performed by Moni Ovadia (Centro Videoarte in Ferrara, 1994; the radio version broadcast by Rai Tre obtained a special mention at the Prix Italia 1994), a video project for the Museo d'Arte Moderna in Rovereto (1995), a production for Rome Europe Festival (1995), Tosca at the Teatro Regio di Torino (1995 and 1997), the première of Zaide by Mozart/Berio at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (1995), of Unreported Imbound Palermo based on the novel of Daniele Del Giudice at the Biennale Musica di Venezia (1995) and of Oering's Dokumentation I in Spoleto (1996; Orpheus Prize 1996), Nabucco at the Teatro Regio di Torino (1997).

Productions since 1994/5 season include Mozart's Da Ponte trilogy including Così fan tutte in Cagliari (1995), for As.Li.Co. in Pavia, Cremona, Brescia and Bergamo (1996), at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo (1997) and at the Teatro Verdi di Sassari (1997); Le nozze di Figaro in Sassari (1997) and in Cagliari (1997); Don Giovanni in Lecce (1996) and in a new staging produced by the Europera Studio in Köln (1998), subsequently performed in a tour sponsored by European Union in numerous French and Italian cities (1998).

In 1997 he was the stage director and the co-author of Mozart, le fataliste. In 1998 he set up Majakovskij. L'incidente è chiuso, concerning Majakovskij's life and poetry, written by Daniele Abbado with Scarzella and Corti and performed by Lucilla Morlacchi. In 1998 he also staged Der Freischütz at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome (with Myung-Whun Chung), where he has recently returned for Tannhäuser. In the same period Daniele Abbado directed his first production at the Stadttheater in Zurich, staging the new production of Luisa Miller.

He opened his 1999/2000 season with Britten's The rape of Lucretia at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, followed by Mefistofele at the Vittorio Emanuele di Messina and Macbeth at the Macerata Opera Festival.

His 2000/1 season was marked by new productions of The Rape of Lucretia at the Teatro Comunale Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Così fan tutte in Cagliari, Passaggio at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Ascesa e caduta della città di Mahagonny in Messina and Pollicino in Rome, followed by Norma at the Arena Sferisterio di Macerata and Il barbiere di Siviglia in Bergamo.

More recent engagements include Les oiseaux de passage, Lohengrin at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Die Zauberflöte at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa,at the Nuovo Teatro Comunale di Bolzano and at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, and The Rape of Lucretia at the Teatro de la Maestranza in Sevilla. He has just gained a great success and enthusiastic approvals with his new stagings of Marin Faliero at the Teatro Regio di Parma, of Il processo at the Teatro Valli di Reggio Emilia and at the Teatro alla Scala, and Jeanne d'Arc au Bucher for the opening of the Teatro Massimo di Palermo 2002/3 season.

Highlights of his future engagements also include new productions of Tosca at the Teatro Regio di Torino, Marin Faliero at the Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, Elektra at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo and Il Re pastore in Ancona.
