Born in Moscow, Vladimir Jurowski completed the first part of his musical studies in his native town with his father and at the Conservatory. In 1990 he moved with his family to Germany where he finished his studies at the Music Academy in Dresden and in Berlin, specialising with Colin Davis, Rolf Reuter and Semion Skigin.

Since his debuts at the Wexford Festival (1995) and at Covent Garden in London in 1996, he was invited to conduct many performances at the Komische Oper in Berlin, with the Welsh National Orchestra in Cardiff, the Orchestra Sinfonica «Giuseppe Verdi» in Milan and the Orchestra of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna. In 1997 he made his successful debuts on the podium of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and at the Echternach Festival with the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra. During the same year he also met with an outstanding success and enthusiastic approvals at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, where he conducted Moïse et Pharaon, and made his debuts at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, at the Teatro Reál in Madrid and at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome (first Italian performance of Hans Werner Henze's Symphony n. 8).

Vladimir Jurowski has subsequently been regular guest of some of the most important musical institutions in Italy and abroad, such as the Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, Welsh National Opera in Cardiff, Royal Opera House-Covent Garden in London, Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, International Festival of Edinburgh, Opéra Bastille de Paris, Komische Oper in Berlin, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Teatro Comunale di Firenze, Oslo Philharmonic, Teatro di San Carlo di Napoli, Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, English National Opera, Bayerischer Rundfunk, Orchestra Sinfonica Verdi in Milan, Orchestra Sinfonica della Rai di Torino, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Russian National Orchestra. In December 1999 he debuted at the Metropolitan Opera, with Rigoletto. He has recently made his symphonic debut in Usa with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra and returned to the Teatro Comunale di Bologna for The Queen of Spades and to the Met for Evgenij Onegin and Jenufa.

Highlights of his future engagements include the new productions of Parsifal at the Welsh National Opera, The Queen of Spades at the Metropolitan Opera, as well as Die Fledermaus, Die Zauberflöte and Gianni Schicchi in Glyndebourne, The bartered bride and Jolanta at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Evgenij Onegin, Die Fledermaus and War and Peace in Paris. He will also conduct symphonic concerts with the Ensemble Intercontemporain de Paris, the London Philharmonic, the Gürzenich Orchester in Köln, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra Sinfonica della Rai di Torino, the orchestras of Teatro Comunale di Bologna, of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and Teatro La Fenice di Venezia.

Since 2002 Vladimir Jurowski has been appointed as Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica Verdi in Milan and, since August 2000, of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna's Orchestra. He has just been nominated Music Director of the Glyndebourne Festival Opera and was recently awarded the Abbiati Prize for Best Conductor of the year 2000.

Vladimir Jurowski's discography includes, among others, the first recording (1994) of Exil for soprano and chamber orchestra by Giya Kancheli, on the Ecm label, L'etoile du Nord for Naxos-Marco Polo Records (1996), Werther (1999) for the debut on the BMG label, and works by Milhaud, Debussy and Tomasi recorded for Arte Nova (1999).
