Born in Cheshire, he studied at Queen's College, Oxford, and the RNCM, winning the 1975 Richard Tauber Competition.

He has appeared with all the leading British opera companies. Since 1976 he has been a member of The Royal Opera, his repertory including 'Die Zauberflöte', 'Lulu', 'Manon Lescaut', 'Turandot', 'Salome', 'Khovanshchina', 'Fidelio', 'Boris Godunov', 'King Priam', 'Otello', 'Das Rheingold', 'Der Rosenkavalier', 'Stiffelio', 'Arabella', 'Macbeth', 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', 'The Turn of the Screw', 'Peter Grimes', 'Billy Budd', 'Falstaff', 'The Greek Passion', 'Tosca', 'The Queen of Spades', 'The Bartered Bride', 'Parsifal', 'Attila' and 'Roberto Devereux'.

He has sung in Hamburg, Munich, Paris, Madrid, Brussels, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Lisbon, Florence and Venice.

His recent performances have included Herod (WNO), Siegmund (Dublin) and Captain Vere (Flanders Opera). His plans include 'Khovanshchina' (ENO, Brussels), 'Wintermärchen' (Barcelona), Peter Quint (Chicago) and Idomeneo (Amsterdam).
