With his heavy voice and superb acting Urs Markus is predestined for the demanding baritone roles in the operas of Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss.
No wonder he has seen such success as DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER (Teatro di Roma, Oper Leipzig, Nationaltheater Mannheim, etc), KURWENAL (at the Staatsoper, at the Hamburgische Staatsoper, in Trieste, Mannheim, etc), TELRAMUND (Strasbourg, Nancy, etc), HANS SACHS, OREST (la Scala di Milano), AMFORTAS (Staatstheater Kassel) WOTAN (Walkyrie), and many others.
He performs with famous conductors such as James Conlon, Lorin Maazal, Garcia Navarro, Jeffrey Tate, Hans Wallat and Lothar Zagrosek, with stage directors such as Willy Decker, Christian Mielitz, Roland Velte, Herbert Wernicke, and collegues like Gabi Schnaut, Luane de Vol, Siegfried Jerusalem, Sergej Larin and many others.
The Swiss baritone absolved his musical education at the conservatory of the city of Zurich and at the opera studio of the Zurich Opera House. Further studies took him to Milano as a pupil of Maestro Loforese and Maestro Badiali and to Fribourg as a student of Tini Westendorp.
His first engagements led Urs Markus to Biel, Geneva and Zurich in Switzerland, and to Braunschweig, Mannheim and Hannover in Germany. He is also very much in demand as a guest artist, for example at leading European opera houses such as Berlin, Bologna, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Cologne, Copenhagen and Vienna, just to name a few.
His repertoire also contains such character roles as Pizarro, Scarpia, Dr. Schön (Lulu), Musiklehrer (Ariadne auf Naxos) and Amonasro (Aida), a role he also sang on a tour of Japan in 2003.
