Francisco Araiza is considered to be one of the most important tenors of our time. He was named Kammersänger of the Vienna State Opera in 1988 and since 1977 he has been a permanent member of the Zurich Opera House.

He has performed in all the main opera houses of the world i.e. Munich, Hamburg, Berlin, Leipzig, Dresden, La Scala Milano, Florence, Parma, Rome, Covent Garden London, Bastille Paris, Marseille, Madrid, Barcelona, San Francisco, Houston, Chicago, Metropolitan Opera New York, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Buenos Aires and in Japan and has as well participated in all great international festivals like Bayreuth, Salzburg, Bregenz, Aix-en-Provence, Orange, Edinburgh, the Prague Spring Festival, Verona, Macerata, Rossini Festival in Pesaro, the Schubert Festival Hohenems, the Richard Strauss Festival in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the Festival Schloss Neuschwanstein and the Festival Cervantino in Guanajuato, Mexico.

From 1983 on this most versatile singer who was already known as one of the best interpreters of Mozart and Rossini became a leading tenor of the italian lirico-spinto, the french and heavier german repertory with roles like Edgardo, Alfredo, Duke of Mantua, Riccardo III., Don Alvaro, Don Carlo, Cavaradossi, Pinkerton, Rodolfo, Andrea Chenier, Des Grieux, Faust, Hoffmann, Werther, Romeo, Don Jose, especially however as the young Wagnerian hero.

Highlights of this unusual career were: to be chosen by Herbert von Karajan to record the 'Magic Flute' with him and to debut at his Salzburg Festival in 1980 (the beginning of a longyear artistical relationship), singing Belmonte under the button of Karl Böhm the same year in Munich (the last operatic appearance of this legendary conductor), his big success with the surprising role debut as Des Grieux in the Jean-Pierre Ponnelle production of 'Manon' in Vienna in 1983, which marked the first step into the heavier repertory, in 1985 title role in 'Faust' directed by Ken Russell also in Vienna followed by the recording conducted by Sir Colin Davis, the Award 'Best Musical Event of 1988' for his recital in Tokyo and finally the significant role debuts in the Wagner repertory: Lohengrin in 1990 at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice (with Christian Thielemann conducting) and Walter von Stolzing in the Metropolitan Opera's new production in 1993 (produced by Otto Schenk and conducted by James Levine), which highlightend this vocal and artistic development equally acclaimed by public and press and in 2000 his triumph as Firegod Loge in Robert Wilson's 'Ring'-production in Zurich.

International awards include also the Mozart Medal of the University of Mexico City in 1991, the Mario del Monaco-Award 'Otello d'Oro' in 1995 and the 'Golden Mercure' for the 'Best Performing Opera Singer' (Munich 1996).

He has worked with all the great conductors like Karl Böhm, Herbert von Karajan, Carlos Kleiber, Carlo Maria Giuliani, Sir Colin Davis, Sir Neville Marriner, James Levine, Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti, Seji Ozawa, Giuseppe Patane, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Michel Plasson, Michael Tilson-Thomas, Franz Welser-Möst, Gustav Kuhn, Daniel Barenboim and Christian Thielemann, as well as the great stage directors like Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, Harry Kupfer, August Everding, Götz Friedrich, Otto Schenk, Giorgio Strehler, Franco Zeffirelli, Roman Polanski, David Pountney and Robert Wilson which has been documented in almost fifty recordings for labels as Philips, DGG, EMI, RCA, CBS, Teldec, Orfeo and Atlantis as well as in several video productions for which he was awarded with the 'Deutscher Schallplattenpreis' and the 'Orphée d'Or'. Lots of solo recordings with opera arias and Lieder were released, but also popular repertory (like 'The Romantic Tenor' RCA Red Seal), which ultimately include the crossover titles like 'Vorrei' with popsinger Daniela Simmons.

An illustrated monograph called 'Voices of the World: Francisco Araiza' was published by Atlantis in 1988 as well as his own chapter in the books named 'Great Interpreters' publishes by Westermann, 'Divo' published by Harper & Row and in 'Musicians portrays' by Joachim Kaiser and Walter Schels (Munich 1997) among others.

In 1992 the german television station ZDF presented his own personal portray with the title 'Francisco Araiza. I am a Romantic' and in 2000 he appeared for the first time as an actor in the TV movie 'Almost a gentleman'.

Mr. Araiza is frequently invited to appear during official state visits mainly in Germany: he had the honor to sing for Michail Gorbatschow, Helmut Kohl, mexican former president Ernesto Zedillo, His Majesty King Juan Carlos, Richard von Weizäcker, Roman Herzog, Gerhard Schröder and his highness The Aga Khan.

Born and educated in Mexico City, Francisco Araiza studied voice with Irma Gonzalez in the Conservatorio Nacional de Musica and german repertory with Erika Kubacsek. He took masterclasses with Richard Holm and Erik Werba at the Munich Musikhochschule after having won the ARD-Voice Competition 1974. He also holds a Business Administration degree from the University ot Mexico City. Since 1988 he sponsors the Voice Competition Award of the Escuela Nacional de Musica de la UNAM Mexico City named after him.

In 1996 he grave his first Masterclass at the Vienna Musikhochschule, later on at the Richard Strauss Festival in Garmisch, at the Munich 'Singschul' and the University fo Mexico City. In 2003 he was nominated professor by the ministery of Baden-Württemberg, Germany to teach at the Hochschule für Musik Stuttgart.
Frequently he is asked to participate in the juries of all international Singing Contests, for instance the ARD-Voice Competition in Munich and the most reknown BERSTELSMANN-Voice Competition 'Neue Stimmen' in Gütersloh.
