She first studied 'cello and singingat New Hampshire University. She went to Salzburg in 1977 where she studied German culture and literature. In addition to both voice (with Walter Ranniger) and cello at the Mozarteum. She made her debut in 1979 at the Staatstheater Darmstadt as Jungfer Anne in Nicolai's Lustigen Weibern von Windsor. She sang other parts there such as Blondchen, Cherubino, Nathalie in Hans Werner Henze's Prinz von Homburg and Massenet's Manon. She was engaged by the opera house in Frankfurt am Main for the 1983-84 season. From 1984, she was under contract in Hamburg and Munich as well as Frankfurt. In 1984, she made a guest appearance at Covent Garden as Sophie; in 1985 she was Pamina for La Scala and was admired in Handel's Semele at the Ludwigsburg Festival. In 1987, she sang Sophie for Monte Carlo, Pamina again for the Grand Théâtre in Geneva and Blondchen for Covent Garden. In 1988, she was heard in Lausanne as Adina in L'elisir d'amore and in Zurich as Susanna. For the 1989-90 season, she played Adele in Die Fledermaus for the Metropolitan Opera; she undertook the same role for Chicago in 1989. In 199 in San Diego she sang Nannetta in Falstaff and Pamina at the Vienna State Opera. At the Met, she sang Sophie in 1991 and Nanetta in 1992 and 1995. She was a guest at Covent Garden in 1995 where she sang Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro. She has also been successful as a concert singer as much as for her oratorio work as for her lieder singing. In 1987 and 1989 she sang recitals at the Salzburg Festival. She is married to the well-know Swedish baritone Håkan Hagegård.
