Although he wished to pursue a career in Chemistry, he began vocal training under Friedrich Wilhelm Hetzel, then Dietger Jacob at the College of Music in Dortmund. He obtained his first engagement in 1962 in Essen and made his debut as the Police Commisioner in Der Rosenkavalier. He became first bass at the Hamburg State Opera in 1964 and soon embarked on a worldwide career. He appeared as a guest with the Hamburg State Opera in Montreal, New York, Stockholm and at the Edinburgh Festival. In 1968 he appeared at the Glyndebourne Festival as Sarastro, one of his outstanding roles.In 1971 he made his debut at the Chicago Opera; In 1972, he was engaged by the Metropolitan Opera, debuting as Sarastro. During the following seasons, he sang Gurnemanz, Wotan and Hunding in "Die Walküre", Fafner, Lodovico in Verdi's Otello (1988), and again Sarastro (1991). Since 1972, he has become famous as a great interpreter of Wagner at the Bayreuth Festival where he sang the Landgrave (1972-74, 1977-78, 1985, 1995), Pogner (1973-75), Titurel (1972-73) and Gurnemzanz (1975-85, 1987-93, 1995), King Heinrich (1979-81, 1993), Daland (1990-93), Wotan (1976), the Wanderer (1976, 1978), Fafner (1972-73) and Hunding (1994-95). He repeated his interpretations of Gurnemanz and Hunding as guest at the Covent Garden Opera in London in 1974. He took part in world premieres at the Hamburg State Opera of Zwischenfälle bei einer Notlandung (Incidents at a forced landing) by Boris Blacher (4 February 1966), Arden muss sterben (Arden must die) by A.Goehr (5 March 1967), Die Teufel von Loudun (The Devils of Loudun) by K.Penderecki (20 June 1961), Der Belagerungszustand (State of siege) by Milko Kelemen (13 January 1970), Jakobowsky und der Oberst (Jakobowsky and the Colonel) by Giselher Klebe (2 November 1965), Resan (The Journey) by Lars Johan Werle (1969), and Ein Stern geht auf aus Jakob (A star rises from Jacob) by Paul Burkhard (6 December 1970). In addition to his engagement at the Hamburg State Opera, he made guest appearances at the Vienna State Opera and in Chicago. In 1986 he sang Ochs at La Scala, then at Covent Garden Opera. He made successful guest appearances at the Opéra de Paris, at the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires and at the major opera houses in Germany. He was an outstanding concert performer and was particularly successful in the interpretation of the works of J.S.Bach.
