Jeritza Maria
soprano [ 1887 - 1982 ]

This Czech soprano, later naturalized in the USA, began her career in Vienna where she spent almost twenty years. Then she sang with the Metropolitan Opera and at Covent Garden. Among other distinctions, she was the first performer of Strauss's Ariadne in both versions of Ariadne auf Naxos, and the first Empress in 'Die Frau ohne Schatten'. She also sang the title rol in the Vienna and New York premieres of Janácek's Jenufa. Critics ranked her in the category of 'singing actresses', which she put to good use in performing the role of Tosca. In this role she was heard and seen by audiences of the New German Theater in Prague - three times in 1920 and once in 1932.
