Mary Cavan, in the last year of the first world war this American soprano's guest performances in the New German Theater in Prague created a sensation. Over the course of five and a half months she appeared fortytwo times in ten roles, among them Tosca which she sang four times. The audiences loved her, but the critics attacked the theater's management for preferring verismo repertoire to suit Cavan. The scandals that accompanied her stay in Prague at the time were not forgotten, and her attempted return in 1929 ended in a fiasco.
