Wycik Ekhart
direttore d'orchestra

Ekhart Wycik is Principal Conductor and Associated General Music Director of the Dortmund Opera Theater in Germany since August of 2006. His first production in his new engagement, Bizet’s „Carmen“, received rave reviews, and was headlined as a „splendid debut of the new conductor“ by the press. Similarily acclaimed were his following productions of „Rosenkavalier“, Rimsky-Korsakov’s „Golden Cockerel“ and Verdi’s „Rigoletto“.

In addition to his engagement in Dortmund, the German conductor was soon after his US debut appointed director of the Contemporary Music Concert series of the Tyrolian Summer Festival in Erl/Austria and Principal Guest Conductor of the Wichita Grand Opera in the USA. The upcoming productions of Verdi’s „Aida“ and Bizet’s „Pearl Fishers“ in 2009 will be his fourth appearance with this company in the US.

Since 2005, when he took over Mahler’s 5th Symphony on short notice, Wycik is assistant for Maestro Gustav Kuhn, from which he also receives continuous musical support and artistic advice.

Next to his many responsibilties at the Dortmund Opera, including his successful and highly acclaimed productions of „Salome“ and „Cavalleria/Pagliacci“, Ekhart Wycik was invited to conduct performances of „Tosca“ at the Tyrolian State Theater in Innsbruck/Austria.

In the upcoming season he will give his UK conducting debut with the Scottish National Opera in Glasgow/Scotland. In October 2009, he will conduct for the first time in Seoul/Korea.

Ekhart Wycik graduated „summa cum laude“ from the Robert-Schumann-University of Music in Düsseldorf, with a major in conducting and minors in music history and philosophy. After his studies, he continued his work through workshops with Heinz Rögner, Sergiu Celibidache and Leif Segerstam of the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, as well as masterclasses in Vienna and Mürzzuschlag/Austria where he conducted the final concerts.

Prizes include the Bielefeld Operntaler, an award for promising young artists in the field of opera, a stipend and fellowship from the German Academic Exchange Program, of the Richard Wagner society, a stipend and assistance at the Verona Opera Festival/Italy, and the Furtwängler Conducting Prize from the International Furtwängler Masterclass.

In addition to his vast operatic experience and repertoire, Wycik has acquired an impressive concert repertoire. The young conductor has appeared with the Deutsches Sinfonie-Orchester Berlin, Philharmonic Orchestra of Halle, the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Rheinland-Pfalz, as well as the Berlin Symphonic Orchestra and Bochum Symphony Orchestra, the Rhenish and North German Philharmonic Orchestras, the Frankfurt Symphony Orchestra and Saarbrücken’s Radio Symphony Orchestra. Others include the Orchestra of Radio and Television Ljubljana/Slovenia, the Philharmonic Orchestra Szómbathély/Hungary, the Wichita Symphony Orchestra/USA, and the Orchestra Haydn of Bolzano e Trento/Italy.
