Professor Ralf Weikert was born in St. Florian (Austria) and received his first musical training at the Bruckner-Konservatorium in Linz. He completed his studies at the Musikhochschule in Vienna under Prof. Hans Swarowsky. In 1965 Weikert won First Prize at the Nicolai-Malko-Competition in Copenhagen. One year later he was granted the Mozart-Interpretation-Prize by the Austrian Minister of Culture. In 1975 the Dr.-Karl-Böhm-Award was presented him from the great conductor himself. Until 1977 Ralf Weikert was Principal Conductor and Music Director of the City Theatre in Bonn. After an appointment as executive Generalmusikdirektor at the Frankfurt Opera, in 1981 he came to Salzburg as Principal Conductor of the Mozarteum-Orchestra and Director of the Landestheater. In 1974 Weikert made his debut at the Vienna State Opera and in 1975 at the Hamburg State Opera. His appearance at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in 1979 were followed by performances at the Bavarian State Opera Munich (1981) and the Metropolitan Opera House in New York (1987). Since 1971 Ralf Weikert has been a regular guest at the Salzburg Festival, the Festival of Aix-en-Provence, the Bregenz Festival and since 1987 the Arena di Verona as well. Ralf Weikert has made guest appearances, both as concert and opera-conductor in all important music centres in Austria, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Holland, Greece, Scandinavia, USA and Japan. Numerous recordings as well as radio and TV-productions in Europe and the US took place under his direction. From 1983 until 1992 Ralf Weikert was Music Director of the Zurich Opera. Since then he works as free-lance conductor in opera and concert with regular guest-contracts with the Opera in Zurich, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Vienna Staatsoper, the Staatsoper Stuttgart, Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Opera of Amsterdam as well as with numerous orchestras on both sides of the Atlantic and Japan. In 1994/95 he was highly praised for his performances in Amsterdam ('Die Fledermaus'), Athens ('Fidelio'), in Zurich ('Katja Kabanova') and in Berlin ('Freischütz') in 1996. In the 1996/97 season Ralf Weikert conducted in Vienna, Munich, Zurich, Catania, Genova, Zagreb, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Dresden, Berlin, Tokyo and San Francisco. The 1997/98 season brought him to Amsterdam ('La Traviata'), Zürich ('Zauberflöte'), Stuttgart ('Italiana in Algeri'), München ('Barbiere', 'Anna Bolena', 'Lucia di Lammermoor'), Catania ('Fidelio') and San Francisco ('Lulu'). In November 1997 Ralf Weikert conducted a complete recording of Rossinis 'Barbiere' with Edita Gruberova. In 1997/98 he appeared in concerts in Stuttgart, Hamburg, Catania, Prag, Bratislava, Geneve, Vienna and Munich. The next season wil bring Ralf Weikert to Vienna State-Opera, München State-Opera, Teatro Real of Madrid, Stuttgart Opera and Zurich Opera, etc. |
