Ricarda Merbeth was born in Chemnitz. After the successful completion of her studies in voice and educational theory at the music highschool "Felix-Mendelssohn-Bartholdy" in Leipzig, she was engaged as a lyric soprano at the Municipal Theatre of Magdeburg. Her roles there included Mimi in LA BOHEME, Contessa in LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, Tatyana in EUGENE ONEGIN, Fiordiligi in COSI FAN TUTTE, Marzelline in FIDELIO, Antonia in LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN, Agathe in DER FREISCHÜTZ, Elisabeth in TANNHÄUSER and Eva in DIE MEISTERSINGER VON NÜRNBERG. |
In 1993 she participated in the tricentennial gala performance of the Opera House of Leipzig in André Grety's 'Zemire et Azor'. Two years later she could be heard as Agnes in the German world premiere of the opera EIN TRAUMSPIEL by swedish composer Ingwar Lindholm. |
For the season 1997/98 Ricarda Merbeth joined the German National Theatre of Weimar, expanding her already wide spread repertory by such crucial roles as Marguerite in Gounod's 'Faust' with which she also appeared on other German stages. In 1999, in the framework of the Festival 'European Kulturstadtjahr in Weimar, she was much applauded in the world premiere of CAROLIN by Michael Obst, in which she interpreted the title part. |
Her career took a steep uphill climb when she became a member of the Vienna State Opera in 1999. She was awared the "Eberhard Waechter medal" for her fine interpretation of Irene in Wagners RIENZI in 2001 |
Having received the honor of a Bayreuth scholarship by the Richard Wagner Guild in 1993, she was then invited for Freia, Gerhilde/Helmwige and Gutrune in the new production of Wagner's 'Ring' for the Bayreuth Festival in 2000/01. Her big breakthrough, however came in summer 2002 when she received overwhelming praise by the public and the international press for her interpretation of Elisabeth in TANNHÄUSER conducted by Christian Thielemann. She will repeat this part also in 2003 and the following years. |
Ricarda Merbeth has been heard in many other internationally renowned Theatres and Concert Halls such as the Hamburg State Opera, Dresden's Semperoper and Staatskapelle, in Frankfurt, Berne, Cologne and Milan and has sung under the musical direction of conductors such as Sinopoli, Metha, Viotti, Albrecht, Schneider, Knüsel, Boder, Bernet, Young, Runnicles, Luisi, de Billy, Hager, Fischer, Thielemann and has sung concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic in Japan.
