Matos Elisabete

Elisabete Matos was born in Braga, Portugal, where she studied singing and violin. She won a scholarship of the Gulbenkian Foundation and moved to Spain to complete her studies with Felix Lavilla, Enza Ferrari, Angeles Chamorro, Miguel Zanetti and Teresa Berganza. @ After her debut at the Hamburg Opera in the role of Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni and as Alice Ford in Falstaff. In 1997 she took part in the opening acts of the Teatro Real in Madrid, singing the role of Marigaila in the world premiere of Antonio García Abril's Divinas Palabras with Plácido Domingo, who inmediately invited her to sing the leading role besides José Carrera sat the Washington Opera in Sly, by Wolf-Ferrari. @ She has sung, among others, the roles of Chimène in Le Cid by Jules Massenet in the Teatro de la Maestranza de Sevilla and at the Washington Opera,the title role in Margarita la tornera (both with Plácido Domingo); Elsa in Lohengrin in her debut at the Gran Teatro del Liceo de Barcelona; Mimí in La Bohème by Puccini at the Teatro San Carlos in Lissabon and at the Colisseum in Oporto; La voix humaine at the Teatro de la Maestranza and the Countess Almaviva in the Teatro Villamarta in Jerez. @ Her most important recent performances are Dolly, in Sly, in her debut at the Teatro Regio di Torino and at the Opera de Nice (where she also performed Zaza in a concert versión of Leoncavallo's opera) and Micaela in Carmen at the Teatro San Carlos in Lisboa. In March ,she took part in the Verdi gala concert in Parma conducted by Maestro Mehta, with famous singers like Pavarotti, Domingo and Carrerras. This concert was broadcasted worldwide by television. @ Her most recent performances are Elisabetta de Valois in a new staging of Don Carlo at the Teatro Real in Madrid; Amelia Grimaldi in Simon Boccanegra and La battaglia di Legnano at the Massimo Bellini di Catania, Freia in Rheingold in Torino, Fiordiligi in Così fan Tutte at La Scala di Milano, conducted by Riccardo Muti, Tosca in Macerata,Venice and Catania, Andrea Chernier in Bergamo, Katia Kavanova and Anna in Le Villi at the Liceo de Barcelona, Dolly in Sly at the Teatro dell' Opera di Roma and Japan and The flying Dutchman in Niza, among others. @ Besides the operatic repertoire, Elisabete Matos often visits important concert halls, singing often Lied and symphonies in a wide repertoire that goes from Bach to contemporary music. Her most important recent concerts are, among others,Beethoven's 9th Symphony in Cagliari, conducted by Lorin Maazel; The Three Corned Hat by Manuel de Falla with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Daniel Baremboim; and an Mozart concert with the Lissabon Symphony Orchestra, conducted by G.Carella and Offrandes, by Varése, conducted by C. Walmar. She is often invited to sing at the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lissabon. @ She has recorded the Requiem by Suppé with the Orchestra and Chorus of the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lissabon, conducted by Michael Corboz; the title role in La Dolores, by Bretón,with Plácido Domingo for the Decca label. She has been awarded with a Grammy in 2000 for this recording. She also has recorded the title role in Margarita la Tornera, by R. Chapí, with Plácido Domingo.
