American baritone Greer Grimsley is rapidly gaining international recognition as an outstanding dramatic artist.

Recent seasons' engagements included his San Diego Opera debut singing Telramund in Lohengrin, Orest in Elektra at Santa Fe Opera, the title role in Don Giovanni with Baltimore Opera, and Wotan in Das Rheingold for L?Opéra de Montreal, followed by Der Fliegende Holländer in Bologna, Reggio Emilia and Deutsche Oper in Berlin. He will soon revisit the title role of Der Fliegende Holländer in Nancy. He made his San Francisco Opera debut in the 2001/2 season as Scarpia in Tosca, and in the 2000/1 season returns to the Met for performances of Lulu.

In the 1998/9 season he returned to Seattle Opera as Mephistopheles in Faust, to New Orleans Opera for the title role in Der Fliegende Holländer, he made his Teatro Real debut as Escamillo in Carmen, he returned to Royal Danish Opera Copenhagen for Tristan und Isolde, he sang the title role in Don Giovanni at Opera Carolina, made his St. Louis Symphony debut as Escamillo in Carmen, and his debut at Aarhus-Den Jyske Opera as Jokanaan in Salome. Greer Grimsley also joined the Metropolitan Opera for the 1999 Pension Fund Gala for Acts III and IV of Carmen opposite Placido Domingo. He sang Mephistopheles in Faust in Oviedo, Spain in Fall 1999.

In 1997/8 season, Greer Grimsley returned to the Metropolitan Opera for Carmen, which he repeated for Baltimore Opera, Seattle Opera for Kurwenal in Tristan und Isolde, Minnesota Opera and Orlando Opera for Scarpia in Tosca, Royal Danish Opera Copenhagen for Telramund in Lohengrin and to reprise Mandryka in Arabella, and he sang Don Giovanni in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain.

In the 1996/7 season the artist sang Scarpia at Houston Grand Opera, Don Pizarro in Fidelio for the Baltimore Opera, the title role in Der Fliegende Holländer for Utah Opera and the Staatstheater Giessen, he made his Orlando Opera debut in the title role of Don Giovanni, he debuted at the Royal Danish Opera-Copenhagen as Madryka in Arabella, sang Escamillo in Carmen for the Metropolitan Opera's parks performances and sang the role of Canyka in the world première of Ashoka?s Dream at Santa Fe Opera.

During season 1995/6 he repeated his internationally acclaimed Escamillo in Carmen for Seattle Opera, Vancouver Opera and in Messina, Sicily, and returned to the Metropolitan Opera as Jokanaan in Salomé. He made his Minnesota Opera debut as the Four Villains in Offenbach?s Les Contes d?Hoffmann and he made his debut with the Opera de Bellas Artes in Mexico City as Kurwenal in Tristan und Isolde. In July 1996, Greer Grimsley made his New York Philharmonic debut as Don Pizarro in Fidelio under the baton of Kurt Masur in the inaugural season of the Lincoln Center Festival.

During the 1994/5 season he made his Metropolitan Opera debut as Balstrode in Peter Grimes, and two Italian debuts as Escamillo in Carmen at the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto and at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna. He also performed Escamillo for Edmonton Opera?s Carmen and Jokanaan in the Utah Opera Company's production of Salome.

Greer Grimsley made his Seattle Opera debut to much acclaim as Telramund in Lohengrin during the 1993/4 season. He also essayed the role at the Stadttheater Giessen that season, made his Grand Théatre de Genève debut as Escamillo in a production of Carmen that was televised throughout Europe, and made his debut with the New Israeli Opera in Les contes d'Hoffmann. During the 1992/3 season Greer Grimsley was heard as Amonasro in Aida with the Opera de Caracas in Venezuela, and made his Opera Company of Philadelphia debut as Escamillo. He returned to the Stadttheater Basel in Switzerland to reprise the title role of Don Giovanni, and to perform Scarpia in Tosca.

Greer Grimsley made his Scottish Opera debut as Jokanaan in Salome and returned to Glasgow for Don Pizarro in Fidelio and for Escamillo in Carmen. He has also sung Escamillo at the Bregenz Festival in Austria, Scarpia in Tosca with the Utah Opera Company and, in the American premiere of Verdi's French language Le Trouvère, the Count de Luna for Tulsa Opera. He was heard at the Wexford Festival in Ireland as Richard Lionheart in Marchner's Der Templer und Die Juden. He has also performed with Houston Grand Opera, the Santa Fe Opera, Florida Grand Opera and New Orleans Opera. He first came to international attention as Escamillo in the Peter Brook production of La tragédie de Carmen, which he sang in venues around the world.
