He began voice training in his native Berlin. In 1952 he won the Meistersinger competition in Nürnberg and with it an invitation to the USA. In the same year he accepted his first engagement in Wiesbaden, and only a year later was invited by Günther Rennert to the Hamburgische Staatsoper. His great break-through came in 1956 when he sang Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Wiener Staatsoper. Since that time, one could not imagine a program at international music festivals and great opera houses of the world without him. An important step in his career was the Metropolitan Opera, where he made his debut as Wolfram. He also sang this role in 1965 in Bayreuth, then returned as Beckmesser. At the Met he sang Papageno in the famous Rennert/Chagall production. Additional Mozart roles are Figaro, the Count, Guglielmo and Don Giovanni. Aside from opera, he felt a great love for Lieder, particularly Schubert. He was a founder of the Schubert festivals in Hohenems, Vienna and New York. In addition to his numerous responsibilities on stage, in the concert halls, on television and in the recording studio, he held Master Classes all over the world on the interpretation of lieder. Hermann Prey was a Kammersänger of the Bavarian Staatsoper. He received many prizes and was an honorary member of the Society of the Friends of Music of Vienna. |
