Born in Carpi, Riccardo Ferrari started his musical studies at the Conservatory of Parma. He also studied with Gina Cigna, Aldo Protti and Samuel Ramey.

In 1990 he successfully participated in several voice competitions and gave concerts in many Italian cities, including Modena, Carpi, Faenza, Parma, Cagliari and Bologna.

Among his past performances it is worth mentioning Rigoletto at the Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, the Teatro alla Scala, the Arena di Verona and the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, in Busseto, Benevento, Ascoli, and on tour in Japan with the Rai Symphony Orchestra of Turin, Turandot (Timur) in Venice, at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa and at the Caracalla Festival in Rome, at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, in Nice and at the Arena Sferisterio in Macerata and at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma (un mandarino), La Bohème (Colline) at the Teatro Regio di Torino, the Politeama Greco in Lecce, in Piacenza, Verona and Ascoli, Lucia di Lammermoor (Raimondo) in Turin, the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, in Venice, Sassari and on tour in Japan, Madama Butterfly at the Teatro Regio di Parma, the Teatro alla Scala and in Cagliari, as well as Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Teatro Comunale di Ferrara (1995, conducted by Claudio Abbado) and in Bilbao, and La forza del destino (Padre Guardiano) in Turin, at the Scottish Opera and in Antwerp. His repertoire also includes Semiramide (Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, Rossini Opera Festival di Pesaro and Bilbao), Carmen (Zuniga; Messina, Cagliari and Arena Sferisterio in Macerata), Nabucco (debut as Zaccaria in Cordoba, 1995; Teatro dell'Opera di Roma and Teatro Rendano di Cosenza, 1998), Norma (Oroveso; Fano, Bilbao and Las Palmas), Aida (King, Dublin; Cd recorded), Gounod's Faust (Venice), Roméo e Juliette (Festival of Martina Franca), Guillaume Tell and Moïse et Pharaon (Rossini Opera Festival di Pesaro), Tosca (Angelotti; Teatro Valli di Reggio Emilia), Macbeth (Bilbao and Cagliari) and Verdi's Requiem (Ascoli).

In 1999/2000 season Riccardo Ferrari obtained a great success as Fiesco in Simon Boccanegra in Pisa, Como, Lucca, Ravenna and Rovigo, in Roméo et Juliette at the Teatro Regio di Parma and in Faust (Mefistofele) at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa. He opened his 2000/1 season debuting at the Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv in the role of Commendatore (Don Giovanni) and taking part in a tour of Norma (Oroveso) to the theatres of Cremona, Bergamo, Como, Pavia and Brescia. Successful debuts at the Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova have followed: as Sir Giorgio in I puritani, Joe in Mahagonny and as Vecchio Ebreo in Samson et Dalila (under the baton of Michel Plasson and with the direction of Hugo de Ana). At the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, he performed in Tosca (Cesare Angelotti), Aida (Il Re) and Rigoletto (Conte di Monterone). During the last season, Riccardo Ferrari made his Philadelphia Opera debut singing as Commendatore in Don Giovanni, a role he has subsequently revisited at the Arena di Verona and at the Teatro di San Carlo di Napoli, performed at the Teatro alla Scala in Madama Butterfly (Zio Bonzo) and Rigoletto (Conte di Monterone), as Zaccaria in Nabucco in St. Gallen, and in the role of Timur in Turandot in Modena, Ferrara and Piacenza.

Highlights of his future engagements include Rigoletto (Conte di Monterone) at the Arena di Verona and Il gatto con gli stivali in Rome. Riccardo Ferrari will also make his much awaited debuts on the stages of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna and of the Torre del Lago Festival as Zio Bonzo in Madama Butterfly and in Turandot.
