 Italian soprano Paoletta Marrocu studied at the Conservatorio di Musica in Cagliari with Lucia Cappellino and perfected her talent with Renata Scotto. As early as 1990, when she was still studying, she had already won numerous prizes at international singing competitions.



In the mid-nineties, the young soprano made her debut at several Italian opera houses: LUCCA, LIVORNO, JESI: La Wally; TEATRO ALLA SCALA DI MILANO: L´Incoronazione di Poppea (Ottavia) conducted by M° Alberto Zedda; RAVENNA: Orfeo (title part); CAGLIARI, PALERMO, TEATRO COMUNALE DI FIRENZE: Cavalleria Rusticana (Santuzza), further in FLORENCE, Aida conducted by M° Zubin Metha and Zanetto (Silvia) by Mascagni; JESI: Teseo Riconosciuto (Medea) conducted by M° Alberto Zedda; TEATRO REGIO DI PARMA: Un Giorno di Regno (Marchesa del Poggio) conducted by M° Maurizio Benini; PISA, LUCCA, LIVORNO: Norma. Her repertory comprised other important operas as well, such as: Les Huguenots, Tabarro, Butterfly, Oberto, Artaserse, Il Turco in Italia, Don Chisciotte, Pierrot au Cinema, Mefistofele, Carmen.



Between 1999-2000, she built up an international career which led her to famous opera houses such as the TEATRO COMUNALE DI BOLOGNA: La Cena delle Beffe (Ginevra) conducted by M° Bruno Bartoletti, Tosca with R. Raimondi and V. La Scola conducted by M° Daniele Gatti - OPENING OF THE SEASON; ARENA DI VERONA: Tosca; OPERNHAUS ZURICH: Tosca; DRESDEN: Verdi: Messa da Requiem; BERGEN: Nabucco.



In the season of 2000-2001, Paoletta Marrocu appeared at the following opera houses: OPERNHAUS ZURICH: L’Amore dei tre Re (Fiora) conducted by M° Marcello Viotti, with Samuel Ramey; director: David Pountney; JAPAN OPERA FOUNDATION TOKYO / debut: Macbeth; STAATSOPER MÜNCHEN / debut: Tosca; TEATRO CARLO FELICE DI GENOVA: Andrea Chénier; TONHALLE ZÜRICH: Verdi: Messa da Requiem; STAATSOPER HAMBURG / debut: Un Ballo in Maschera (Amelia); STAATSOPER VIENNA / debut: Tosca; THEATER BASEL: Verdi: Messa da Requiem scenic (director: Andreas Homoki); OPERNHAUS ZURICH: Macbeth NEW PRODUCTION with T. Hampson, R. Scandiuzzi, L. Lima, director: David Pountney.



Further achievements and success added to the soprano’s career in the 2001/2002 season: Il Tabarro and Suor Angelica at the OPERA DE NICE, new production with F. Armiliato and J. Pons; Macbeth at the TEATRO ALLA SCALA DI MILANO under the direction of M° Riccardo Muti and G. Vick; Don Carlo (Elisabetta di Valois) at the NEW NATIONAL THEATRE TOKYO; Don Giovanni (Donna Elvira) at the OPERA MUNICIPAL DE TOULON; Cavalleria Rusticana at the THÉÂTRE ROYALE DE LA MONNAIE BRUXELLES; Alzira at the TEATRO REGIO DI PARMA; Tosca at the NORSKE OPER OSLO and in CASTELLO MEDIOEVALE DI VIGOLENO (for the Fondazione A. Toscanini).



In 2002-2003, Paoletta Marrocu started with the FRANKFURT OPERA’s and the ZURICH OPERA’s season opening, where Nabucco was readopted.


She returned to the BAYERISCHE STAATSOPER MUNICH with Tosca and performed the same role in SEOUL as well. In MANNHEIM she was heard in a Nabucco-Gala with J. Pons und C. Colombara and thereafter performed in an international Forum in DAVOS beside R. Bruson. For the readoption of Don Carlo, she once more gave a guest performance at the ZURICH OPERA (with L. Nucci and S. Ramey, under the direction of M. Viotti), and sang in Un Ballo in Maschera (with S. Licita, under the direction of S. Ranzani). By debuting in the title role of La Bohème in the TEATRO CARLO FELICE DI GENOVA, Marrocu completed her rich and diversified repertory with another new and important role. This debut was followed by performances at the following operas: BASEL: Verdi: Messa da Requiem, readoption; BAYERISCHE STAATSOPER MUNICH Tosca; ST GALLEN. Nabucco-Gala with L. Nucci and in the gardens of the PALAZZO REALE IN TURIN: Tosca.


This year, Paoletta Marrocu opened the 2003/2004 season with a Macbeth-tour with the Milano Scala in TOKYO (with L. Nucci, under the direction of M° R. Muti); and she is going to debut at the STAATSOPER VIENNA as Fedora on the side of P. Domingo. Further performances are scheduled at the following operas: TURIN: La Fanciulla del West / debut; DEUTSCHE OPER BERLIN: La Fanciulla del West / new production conducted by Christian Thielemann; OPERNHAUS ZURICH: I Vespri siciliani / new production with M. Giordani, L. Nucci and R. Raimondi; STAATSOPER MUNICH: Il Trovatore / debut under the direction of M° Z. Metha; SOLOTHURN FESTSPIELE: Un Ballo in Maschera with L. Nucci and finally WASHINGTON OPERA: Andrea Chénier / new production.


In the 2004-2005 season, the TEATRO REAL DE MADRID in Spain will welcome Marrocu in a new production of Macbeth. Further performances are planned in: VIENNA: Andrea Chénier and Tosca, STAATSOPER MUNICH: Tosca conducted by M° Z. Metha and the OPERA DE MARSEILLE: Tosca; GENUA: ll Corsaro (Gulnara), TEATRO COMUNALE DI CAGLIARI: Simon Boccanegra / debut with L. Nucci and R. Raimondi, OPERNHAUS ZÜRICH: Il Trovatore (Leonora), SEMPEROPER DRESDEN: Macbeth.


Furthermore, the roles of Gioconda in CATANIA and Turandot in ZURICH are already in preparation.


In 1998, Paoletta Marrocu was appointed “Artist for Peace” by UNESCO Paris.



Currently, Marrocu is planning a film production of Il Tabarro with J. Cura. A DVD-recording of Macbeth with T. Hampson, R. Scandiuzzi; L. Lima under the direction of D. Pouthney, is already available on the market.


Paoletta Marrocu has recorded several CDs, among them Spontini’s Teseo Riconosciuto, Il Turco in Italia; Cavallis Messa and Magnificat. Cavalleria Rusticana with Andrea Bocelli will be released soon.
