Acclaimed as both singer and actor, Umberto Chiummo has enjoyed an international career with recent successes in Munich as Alidoro in La Cenerentola (Toronto), Ariodate in Xerse (Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich), Conte d'Almaviva (Bern and Rome), Bartolo (Teatro alla Scala with Riccardo Muti), the title role in Le nozze di Figaro (Glyndebourne Festival), Colline in La Bohème in Montpellier, Ircano in Ricciardo e Zoraide at the Rossini Opera Festival of Pesaro, Felix in Donizetti's Les martyrs (Reggio Emilia), Publio in La clemenza di Tito for the Welsh National Opera with Charles Mackerras (production which was awarded the «Olivier Award 1998» as best new opera production), Mefistofele in Faust (Como), Prefetto in Linda di Chamounix at the Teatro alla Scala, Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor at the Théâtre du Capitol in Toulouse and as Garibaldo in Rodelinda at the Glyndebourne and Montreux Festivals.

Umberto Chiummo began the 1998/9 season performing as Leporello in Don Giovanni at the opening of the season of the Teatro Regio di Torino, then he performed as Don Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, followed by Il matrimonio segreto (Il conte Robinson) at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin and Xerse at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich.

1999/2000 season brought him to sing in Le nozze di Figaro (title role) at the Teatro de la Maestranza in Sevilla, at the Oper Frankfurt and at the Festival Mozart in La Coruña, in Britten's The Rape of Lucretia (Collatinus) at the Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova, in L'italiana in Algeri (Haly) in Amsterdam, Il turco in Italia (Selim) at the Opéra-Massy de Paris and at the Opéra de Reims, Il viaggio a Reims at the Festival Mozart in La Coruña, Ariodante at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, and in some concerts with Akademie für Alte Musik und Rias Kammerchor of Berlin in Brussels and at the Montreux-Vevey Festival under the baton of Markus Creed.

In 2000/1 season he returned to the Bayerische Staatsoper to perform Don Giovanni, Le nozze di Figaro, Xerse, and Ariodante, Tamerlano (Leone) at the Teatro Comunale di Firenze, Luisa Miller at the Oper Frankfurt, I Capuleti e i Montecchi at the Lyric Opera in Chicago, Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Teatro Regio di Torino and a concert with works by Mozart at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia under the baton of Myung-Whun Chung.

During the last season, he experienced a great success singing Rodelinda in Glyndebourne, on a tour to the Théâtre du Chatelet de Paris and in London with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment; he returned to Frankfurt for Don Giovanni, to Munich for Il barbiere di Siviglia and Ariodante (King of Scotland), as well as, more recently, to the Festival Mozart in La Coruna as Lord Sydney in Il viaggio a Reims.

Highlights of his future engagements include Xerse (under the baton of Ivor Bolton), Rodelinda (Garibaldo) and Ariodante at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Don Giovanni at the Théâtre Royal de La Monnaie di Bruxelles, at the Opéra de Lille and in Luxembourg, Così fan tutte at the Teatro Regio di Torino, Lucia di Lammermoor at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo, Falstaff in Manchester, under the baton of Mark Elder. In concert, he will be heard in Salzburg (Mozart's C minor Mass K. 427) and in Florence (with ORT-Orchestra della Toscana).

In earlier seasons Umberto Chiummo performed in, among others, L'elisir d'amore (Dulcamara) at the Teatro Regio di Parma (1992), Anna Bolena (Enrico VIII) at the Washington Opera, Don Pasquale in Parma (1993), Cosi' fan tutte (Guglielmo) in Ravenna, L?occasione fa il ladro in Rügen, El retablo de maese Pedro and Ariodante at the Welsh National Opera (1994), Roméo et Juliette at the Opéra Comique de Paris, Il barbiere di Siviglia (Basilio) in Glyndebourne, Lucia di Lammermoor (Raimondo) in Cardiff and Tel Aviv with Zubin Mehta, Rossini's Torvaldo e Dorliska at the Dordrecht Festival (1995), L'impresario in angustie with the Italian-Swiss Radio Symphony Orchestra of Lugano, Ermione (Fenico) in Bruxelles, Der Freischütz (Kilian) at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino with Wolfgang Sawallisch, Il maestro di cappella (Giorgio) in Florence, Alidoro in La Cenerentola in Houston and Don Giovanni (title role) in Sassari.

His concert repertoire includes Mozart's Requiem, Krönungsmesse and C minor Mass KV 427, Beethoven's Mass in C dur Op. 86, Rossini?s Stabat Mater and Petite Messe Solennelle.

His recordings are Don Giovanni (singing the roles of Masetto and Commendatore) in Edinburgh for Telarc, conducted by Charles Mackerras and I Capuleti e i Montecchi for Bmg conducted by Roberto Abbado. He has also recorded for Ricordi, RAI and for Bongiovanni. Recent release was Massenet's Werther conducted by Vladimir Jurowski for Bmg.

Umberto Chiummo graduated at the Conservatory in Pescara and attended masterclasses with Ettore Campogalliani and Claudio Desderi, with whom he performed early in his career as Leporello in Don Giovanni at the Teatro Comunale di Ferrara, and at the Teatro Verdi di Pisa, with the Orchestra Rai di Torino. In 1986 he won the «Belli» Competition of Spoleto, making his debut in Le nozze di Figaro staged by Gigi Proietti and in Il mercato di Malmantile by Cimarosa.
