After graduating from university with degrees in history and English, Annick Massis studied music and singing in Paris.

In 1991 she made her stage debut at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse, and also sang in her first Mozart opera the title role of La Finta Giardiniera. Mozart remained her preferred composer at the time: The C minor Mass, Exultate Jubilate, Requiem, Die Entfürung aus dem Serail (1992) and in 1994 Le Nozze di Figaro for her debut at the Paris Opera (Bastille).

Annick Massis has made a speciality of French opera which has enabled her to triumph in the most impressive roles of this repertoire:

Philine in Mignon (Ambroise Thomas) in 1992 and then in 2001 at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse with Susan Graham as Mignon.

Ophélie in Hamlet (Ambroise Thomas) in the John Cox production of 1994, then in concert at the Washington Concert Opera in September 1998, and, more recently, (January 2001) at the Teatro Reggio in Turin in a production by Nicolas Joel.

Leila in Les Pêcheurs de Perles (Bizet) at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse (autumn 1998).

It is with her interpretation of several of the great bel canto roles that Annick Massis career took a new turn and led her onto the stage of many of the great international opera houses :

The Countess in Le Conte Ory(Rossini), role in which she triumphed at the Opéra Comique in Paris, at the Glyndebourne Festival in 1997 and 98 in a new production by Jerome Savary, conducted by Andrew Davis (available on video), at the Maggio Musicale in Florence in 1998, at the Corum in Montpellier in 1999 conducted by Alberto Zedda, and at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse in March 2001 and in February/March 2003 in Paris (Opéra Comique).

The title role of Lucia di Lammermoor, which she sang in the autumn of 1999 at the Théâtre du Capitole (new co-production Toulouse-Metropolitan Opera New York), at the Liceu in Barcelona in January 2000 (produced by Graham Vick), and with the New York Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in 1999. She will make her Metropolitan Opera House debut with the role of Lucia in December 2002.

Giulietta in I Capuleti e I Montecchi (Bellini), role which she sang in October 1999, with Vesselina Kassarova as Romeo at the Lincoln Centre in New York with the New York Opera Orchestra conducted by Eve Queller.

Elvire in I Puritani (Bellini) in January-February 1999.

Amina in La Sonnambula (Bellini), role in which she had a great success at the Teatro Real in Madrid (April 2000), conducted by Richard Bonynge, and will be singing again in a concert version at the end of 2001 conducted by Alberto Zedda.

Marie in La Fille du Régiment (Donizetti), first at the Grand Théâtre in Geneva and then at the Bordeaux Opera in June 2000.

Gilda in Rigoletto (Verdi) in December 2000.

Amenaïde in Tancredi (Rossini) at the Opera in Marseille in June 2001.

Annick Massis other engagements include the title role of Donizettis Maria di Rohan at the Grand Théâtre in Geneva (autumn 2001) and The Golden Cockerel (Rimsky-Korsakov) for her debut at the San Francisco Opera in 2002 and Marguerite d'Anjou from Meyerbeer with the London Philharmonia Orchestra in November 2002 at the Royal Festival Hall of London.

After having sung the role of Aricie in Hippolyte et Aricie (Rameau), conducted by William Christie at the Paris Opera (Garnier) for the opening of the 1996-97 season, Annick Massis returned there in the spring of 1999 to triumph in the role of La Folie in Platée (Rameau) and again in September 2000 for two roles in Les Indes Galantes (Rameau).

Annick Massis has also performed in concert with such orchestras as LEnsemble Orchestral de Paris, LOrchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, LOrchestre National de France, LOrchestre National de Lyon, LEnsemble Intercontemporain, Les Musiciens du Louvre. She has given recitals at the Théâtre du Chatelet in Paris, La Scala in Milan, the Halle Festival in Germany, the Salle Gaveau in Paris, the Villa Medicis in Rome etc.... In February 2002 she will be singing the role of Annette in the French version of Der Freischütz (Weber) at the Salle Pleyel in Paris.

For the anniversary of the birth of Francis Poulenc Annick Massis sang the Gloria with the Orchestre National de France, conducted by Georges Prêtre and the Stabat Mater with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg.

During the season 1998-99 she sang several times with Trevor Pinnock and the English Concert in programmes devoted to Handel and Mozart.

Annick Massis has just recorded "Persée et Andromède" from Jacques Iber with the label AVIE for 2003.

Annick Massis ist going to record her first CD with the label Opera Rara: Marguerite d'Anjou de Meyerbeer for 2003.

In February 2004 she will have a new CD called "Haydn and Mozart, airs sacrés" with the label Cascavel.@
