Lloyd Robert
basso

In the navy from 1963-66, he achieved the rank of Instructor Lieutenant and intended to make it his career. However, he had begun to study voice while serving and finished his training at the London Opera Centre with Otakar Kraus (1968-69). His debut was in 1969 at the University Opera Society in London as the Minister in the original version of Fidelio. He became a member of Sadler's Wells Opera in London (1969-72). In 1970, he undertook smaller roles at Covent Garden, then moved on to larger ones, notably in Wagner's operas both there and in other major English theaters. He appeared at the Glyndebourne Festival (1972-73 as Sarastro) and Aix-en-Provence. He guested at the Grand Opéra in Paris and San Francisco (1975 as Sarastro), and Boston. He sang his first Don Giovanni at Scottish Opera in Glasgow, and appeared in Amsterdam as Gurnemanz, Munich's Staatsoper as Daland, and in Simon Boccanegra. In 1987 he was a guest at the Comunale in Florence as Boris Godunov. Among his many Covent Garden successes were Gurnemanz (1988), Sarastro (1989) and in Rossini's Guillaume Tell (1990). He sang at the Schwetzingen Festival as Basilio in Barbiere di Siviglia and debuted in that role at the Met in 1988. In 1991 he appeared as Gurnemanz, 1995 as Arkel in Pelléas et Mélisande and as Sarastro. In 1990 he was successful as Boris Godunov in Leningrad, one of his great roles. Chicago heard him in 1991 as Sarastro, the 1993 Holland Festival heard his Arkel, in 1996 he was the Grand Inquisitor in Buenos Aires, and San Francisco Opera saw his Claudius in Thomas' Hamlet. He is an important concert, oratorio and Lied singer and in the film version of "Parsifal" directed by Syberberg, he portrayed Gurnemanz. To his great repetoire must be added König Heinrich, Fasolt, Osmin, Banquo in Verdi's Macbeth (sung in 1985 in Athens' Herodes Atticus Theater), King Phillip, Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor and Monterone in Rigoletto. Recordings: Decca (Ballo in maschera), HMV (Tales of Hoffman, L'Assedio di Corinto, Hugh the Drover, Rheingold, I Capuleti ed I Montecchi, The Little Sweep, Lucia di Lammermoor, The Dream of Gerontius, Mozart Mass), DGG (Fanciulla de West), Philips (Entführung aus dem Serail, Nozze di Figaro, Rigoletto, Tosca, La Bohéme, Barbiere di Siviglia, Béatrice et Bénédict, La Clemenza di Tito, Handel Mass), Orfeo (La Finta Semplice, Acis and Galatea), Chandos (The Apostles, Verdi Requiem), Denon (Damnation de Faust, Roméo et Juliette, Beethoven's 9th Symphony), Telarc (Zauberflöte), Erato (Parsifal), and Thorn-Video (Don Carlos).
