Surian Giorgio
basso

Born in Rijeka (Croatia), after his musical studies, he travelled to Milan to attend the Specialization Courses of the Teatro alla Scala (from 1978 to 1981). Since his debut in Ernani in 1982, he has often been invited to take part in La Scala's lyrical seasons and tours. He there performed in Guillaume Tell for the re-opening of the Theatre, under the baton of Riccardo Muti, and recorded such productions as Ifigenia in Tauride, La Donna del lago, La forza del destino and Rigoletto.

His brilliant operatic career brought him to perform on the world?s great stages, such as the Opéra de Paris, the Royal Opera House-Covent Garden, the Opéra de Lyon, the Grand Teatre de Liceu in Barcelona, the Teatro Comunale di Firenze, the Teatro Massimo di Palermo, the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, the Arena Verona. He is also often invited by the Wiener Staatsoper and Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, and by important concert institutions and festivals (Martina Franca, Pesaro, Ravenna and Salzburg).

Giorgio Surian's repertory spans from baroque music to XXth century compositions, with a predilection for the Belcanto roles. His great vocal extension brought him also to afford also several bass-baritone roles.

His past seasons' highlights include the debuts in the role of Banquo in Macbeth at the Arena di Verona and in Gounod?s Faust at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo, as well as his first Metropolitan Opera of New York production (1997/8 season) of Il barbiere di Siviglia (Don Basilio). At the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino he successfully performed in L'incoronazione di Poppea (Seneca) staged by Luca Ronconi and conducted by Ivor Bolton.

His 2001 season was marked by performances of Mosè in Egitto in Verona, Hamlet by Thomas at the Teatro Regio di Torino, Luisa Miller at the Teatro di San Carlo di Napoli, Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Teatro alla Scala, Ernani in Zurich, Don Pasquale and Attila at the Teatro Comunale di Firenze.

At the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, he successfully sang in Lucrezia Borgia, L'incoronazione di Poppea and Lohengrin (staged by Daniele Abbado and led by Daniele Gatti). Recent engagements also include the performance as Zaccaria in Nabucco at the Arena di Verona, Serrana at the Teatro Sao Carlos in Lisbon, the role of Mefistofele in Faust at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma.

Forthcoming engagements of Giorgio Surian are, among others, Così fan tutte, Fidelio, Le nozze di Figaro and La sonnambula at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Lucia di Lammermoor at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo and in Toulouse, Maria Stuarda at the Teatro alla Scala.
