Born in Pirna, began extensive musical studies at age 7 (violin, recorder, oboe). 1980-86 Vocal training under Prof. Heinz Rech, Berlin Music Conservatory, completed with honors ("excellent"). 1986-88 Opera Studio, German State Opera, Berlin; since 1988 member of the ensemble. Particular success as Pelléas in new production by Ruth Berghaus under Michael Gielen since 1989 Instructor, Hanns Eisler Music Conservatory, Berlin. 1989 1st Prize, Walter Gruner Song Competition, London. Concerts and recitals in: Alte Oper, (Frankfurt), Hannover (North German Radio), Cologne Philharmonic Hall, Wigmore Hall, London, and in Vienna, Zürich, Brussels, Amsterdam, since 1993 Schubertiade Feldkirch, Schwetzingen Festival, Atlanta, Chicago, New York, as well as regular recitals at the German State Opera. Guest appearances: Flanders Festival, Catania, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Salzburg Festival,Innsbruck Early Music Festival , Dresden State Opera, Frankfurt Opera,London Covent Garden, Munich State Opera, Madrid and Bayreuth Festival. Work with conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Sir Georg Solti, Pierre Boulez, Michael Gielen, René Jacobs, Marek Janowski, Fabio Luisi , Zubin Mehta , Antonio Pappano, Horst Stein, Christian Thielemann, Lothar Zagrosek and with directors/producers Ruth Berghaus, Fred Berndt, Nicolas Brieger, August Everding, Erhard Fischer, Nikolaus Lehnhoff, Jonathan Miller, Alexander Schulin, Keith Warner. Kammersänger since 2000. His accompanists at song recitals are Oliver Pohl and Irwin Gage.
