Mario Luperi began his career in 1977 singing Il Nabucco (Gran Sacerdote di Belo) at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, under the baton of Riccardo Muti. He has subsequently appeared in some of the most important Italian theatres, such as the Teatro alla Scala (Stravinskij's Rossignol, Puccini?s Gianni Schicchi, Rossi's Orfeo) and the Teatro Massimo di Palermo (Mozart's La clemenza di Tito, Casella's Donna Serpente, Menotti's Console).

Highlights of the important roles he portrayed during his successful career are Timur in Turandot in Pittsburgh, Macerata, Ravenna and at the Festival Pucciniano in Torre del Lago; Colline in La Bohème in Macerata directed by Ken Russel, in Palermo, in Munich, at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, at the Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv; Ramfis and the King in Aida in Munich, Avignon, Marseille and Bologna; Giorgio in I Puritani in Toulouse, Naples and Marseille; Zaccaria in Nabucco in Copenaghen and Marseille; Oroveso in Norma and Oroe in Semiramide in Naples; Sparafucile in Rigoletto in Cagliari, Macerata, Marseille, at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, in Amsterdam, at the Opéra de Marseille and in Tenerife; Pistola in Falstaff in Naples, at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, at the Teatro Massimo Bellini di Catania, at the Teatro Comunale di Firenze (under the baton of Antonio Pappano), in Tanglewood, Brussels, at the Théâtre du Châtelet de Paris, at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich; Jorg in Stiffelio at the Teatro alla Scala; Tom in Un ballo in maschera and Dottor Grenvil in La traviata in Florence, under the baton of Zubin Mehta; Gesler in Guglielmo Tell at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam conducted by Riccardo Chailly; Nonancourt in Il cappello di paglia di Firenze and Mago Celio in L'Amore delle tre melarance at the Teatro Massimo Bellini di Catania; Il Commendatore in Don Giovanni under the baton of Georg Solti for the opening of Palais Garnier in Paris (1996), on tour with Solti (recorded for Decca) in Antibes, at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, at Festival Mozart in La Coruña and at Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv; Caronte in Monteverdi's L'Orfeo in Amsterdam and at the Teatro Comunale di Firenze; Cesare Angelotti in Tosca in Amsterdam with Riccardo Chailly; Il grande inquisitore and Un frate in Don Carlo at the Opéra de Marseille, at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, at the Opéra National de Paris; Don Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia in Tenerife; Talpa in Il tabarro for a Christmas Concert at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam conducted by Riccardo Chailly; Nettuno in Il ritorno di Ulisse in patria at the Festival Monteverdi in Cremona; the role of Oracolo in Mozart's Idomeneo at La Coruña Festival; Gluck's Alceste in Amsterdam with Chailly; Brogny in La Juive and Oroveso in Norma in Tel Aviv; Lodovico in Otello at the Bayerische Staatsoper.

Recent seasons' highlights of Mario Luperi include successful appearances in the role of Pistola (Falstaff) at the Teatro Real in Madrid and at Royal Opera House-Covent Garden in London, Bartolo in Le nozze di Figaro at the Festival International d'Art Lyrique of Aix-en-Provence, as Sparafucile in Rigoletto at the Arena di Verona, at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo and at the Teatro alla Scala, in Don Giovanni and Turandot at the Nederlanse Opera in Amsterdam, and in Monteverdi's L'Orfeo at Barbican Center in London.

Mario Luperi maintains also an active concert schedule, which includes Rossini's Stabat Mater, Stradella's San Giovanni Battista, Cherubini's Missa, Charpentier's Te Deum and Mozart's Kronüngsmesse, Donizetti's Miserere and Messa da Requiem, Te Deum by Bruckner, Spontini's Olimpia and Verdi's Messa da Requiem.

Forthcoming engagements include Rigoletto in Florence, at the Arena di Verona, at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna and in Amsterdam, Falstaff and Don Carlo at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Alceste in Dresden, Aida in Tel Aviv, Samson et Dalila al Teatro Massimo di Palermo, Die Zauberflöte in Tenerife.

He has recently recorded La Bohème (Colline) for Philips and Monteverdi's L'Orfeo on the Emi label, under the baton of E. Haim.

Born in Oristano, Mario Luperi studied at the Conservatories of Cagliari and Verona. Graduated at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena and at the Accademia Virgiliana in Mantova, he won the «Ettore Bastianini» and the «Voci Verdiane» competitions.
