Johan Botha was born in Rustenburg/South Africa in 1965 where he received his education at the age of thirteen and later continued at the Technical College Pretoria with Eric Muller. 1989 he made his debut as Max in Der Freischütz at the Staatstheater Roodepoort and was given the chance to travel to Germany in 1990, where he first sang at the Bayreuther Festspielchoir in the summer before he made his debut as Gustavo in Un ballo in maschera in Kaiserslautern. In the following he sang most of his parts with the Stadttheater Hagen and the Oper Bonn. Since the 1993/94 season, the artist has been free-lancing. His Italian debut he made in the summer of 1993 with two performances of Verdi's Requiem at the Teatro Bellini in Catania. In Paris his debut at the Opera-Bastille as Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly) was a striking success. Also during that season he made his debut as Canio at the Komische Oper Berlin and as Florestan in Fidelio at the Staatsoper Hamburg. In the same part Johan Botha succeeded at his US-debut at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston. In the fall of 1994 Johan Botha made his triumphantly successful Vienna debut at the Volksoper as Rudolf in Harry Kupfer?s famous production of La Boheme after he had already successfully debuted at the Grand Théâtre de Geneve in the title role of Mozart's Idomeneo in September. With Rudolfo in La Boheme Johan Botha also made his debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in February 1995, before his debut as Florestan in Fidelio followed at the Staatsoper Berlin as well as at the Théâtre de Chatelet in Paris. After his return to Covent Garden with Tosca Johan Botha sang the Cavaradossi also at the Vienna and Berlin Staatsoper. His successful debut as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly at the Milano Scala in January 1996 was followed by Fidelio performances in Paris. After singing a new production of Cavalleria Rusticana with great personal success in Berlin, he sang Beethoven?s 9th Symphony with Sir Georg Solti in London. In fall 1996 he gave his operetta debut in a new production of Das Land des Lächelns at the Volksoper in Vienna which was boadcast live on television. In December 1996 Botha sang his first Lohengrin at the Staatsoper Berlin, and he made his Metropolitan Opera New York debut in Leoncavallos Il Pagliacci as Canio in January 1997 with great personal success. His stunning success there was continued, when Johan Botha sang his first Lohengrin at the Met in April 1998, which brought great critical acclaim from press and audience alike. In the 1996/97 season, the artist sang furthermore Lohengrin at the Théâtre de Châtelet Paris and the Vienna Staatsoper, Fidelio at the Vienna Staatsoper and in Toulouse and Cavalleria Rusticana/Il Pagliacci at the Berlin Staatsoper. At the Vienna Volksoper he performed Pollione in Norma in October 1997, followed by Arrigon in Vespri Siciliani at the Vienna Staatsoper in February 1998, before returning to Berlin for Cavalleria Rusticana and Vienna (Fidelio, Lohengrin and a Mahler concert) later in 1998.<p>"Botha is an excellent Wagner tenor with an unfaltering intensity, whose tuneful, compact and melodious singing reaches us across the stage." Der Standard, Ljubisa Tosic, 15.12.1998 <p>"... and the guest performers are the stars, especially Johan Botha, who performs Stoltzing with an extraordinary, powerful and full tenor voice..." Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Marianne Zelger-Vogt, 15.12.1998 <p> "In his debut as Stoltzing Johan Botha was simply extraordinary. At long last a Wagner tenor, who can steer his voice with total self-assurance, dazzle the orchestra and effortlessly master the highs of the Prize Song; an exceptional performance.? Neues Volksblatt, Irmgard Steiner, 15.12.1998
