The Italian baritone Roberto De Candia has enjoyed success after success on the world's great stages.

Among the most prestigious engagements of recent seasons were his debut at the Glyndebourne Festival in Manon Lescaut (Lescaut) under the baton of John Eliot Gardiner in 1997, his Zurich debut in Don Pasquale (Malatesta), his first Falstaff (Ford) at the Macerata Opera Festival in 1998, as well as his debut as Parmenione in L'occasione fa il ladro at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, where he returned the following seasons in Il signor Bruschino (Bruschino Padre), Adina, ovvero il Califfo di Bagdad, Il viaggio a Reims (led by Daniele Gatti), La Cenerentola and Il turco in Italia.

Roberto De Candia is a regular guest of the Teatro alla Scala, where he made his debut opening the 1996/7 season as Ubalde in Gluck's Armide with Riccardo Muti and where he returned as the Poeta Prosdocimo in Il turco in Italia with Riccardo Chailly, Antonio in Linda di Chamounix, Lescaut in Manon Lescaut, Melitone in La forza del destino (under Riccardo Muti), as well as for Il barbiere di Siviglia (Figaro), L?elisir d?amore (Belcore) and A se stesso by Roman Vlad under the guidance of Giuseppe Sinopoli.

He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1998 as Lescaut in Massenet?s Manon, singing Dandini in La Cenerentola and Belcore in L'elisir d'amore in the same season. He returned in 1999/2000 season to the Metropolitan as Marcello in La Bohème and for a Gala concert with Luciano Pavarotti, followed by his recent appearances as Lescaut in Massenet's Manon and as Taddeo in L'italiana in Algeri.

Roberto De Candia's vast repertoire and international career have also brought him to the Salzburg Festival as Masetto in Don Giovanni, to the Opéra Comique de Paris as Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia, to Avignon as Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor, to the Wexford Festival as Alcandro in Saffo, to Montpellier for Il burbero di buon cuore by Martin y Solér, to the Teatro Comunale di Bologna as Taddeo in L'italiana in Algeri, De Siriex in Fedora and the Poeta Il turco in Italia, to the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma as Dandini in La cenerentola, to Turin in the title role of Gianni Schicchi, as Enrico in Donizetti's Il campanello and Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, to Palermo for Manon Lescaut, King Roger and La cambiale di matrimonio, to Reggio Emilia as Germano in La scala di seta, and as Belcore in L'elisir d'amore to Parma. Roberto de Candia has also essayed Marcello in La Bohème in Verona and Macerata, Rambaldo in La rondine in Rome, Turin and Trieste.@He has recently sung in Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam, at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, at the Teatro alla Scala and at the New National Theatre in Tokyo, in Don Giovanni, Don Pasquale and A village Romeo and Juliet in Cagliari, as well as in La forza del destino in a tour on Japan of the Teatro alla Scala, in La Cenerentola at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo, L?elisir d?amore at the Teatro alla Scala and Don Quichotte a the Teatro Regio di Torino. He has just made his successful debut in the title role of Falstaff in Modena and Reggio Emilia, a role he has subsequently revisited for his debut at the Semperoper in Dresden. Highlights of his recent engagements also include the debuts in La Coruña with Un giorno di regno and at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin with La Bohème, and the portraying of Papageno in Die Zauberflöte with the Orchestra della Toscana and the conducting of Chung.

Forthcoming engagements include L'italiana in Algeri the Teatro alla Scala, La Cenerentola (Dandini) at the Teatro Regio di Torino, L'elisir d'amore at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna and in Cagliari, La forza del destino at the Royal Opera House-Covent Garden in London, La Bohème at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, Il turco in Italia a Las Palmas.

His discography includes Corradino by Carlo Galante, Pacini?s Saffo, Mascagni?s Messa di Gloria, La Cenerentola (for ROF).

He is also heard as the Poeta Prosdocimo in Il turco in Italia with Riccardo Chailly on Decca, a Gramophone Award winner CD, and he has recently recorded again with Decca and Riccardo Chailly La Bohème (Schaunard).

Roberto De Candia began his musical studies as a cellist. He started his vocal studies under Lajos Kozma, later working with Sesto Bruscantini. In 1990 he won the International Competition «A. Belli» in Spoleto, soon after making important debuts in Puccini's Messa di Gloria at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia di Roma and in Massenet's Manon at the Teatro Regio di Parma
