| Born in Australia, Cheryl Barker studied with Dame Joan Hammond in Melbourne. She awarded the Dame Mabel Brookes Fellowship, in 1986 she was winner of the Metropolitan Opera Auditions Competition in Australia and in 1989 winner of the Royal Overseas League Vocal Competition in London. She made her debut as Blondchen in 'Die Entführung aus dem Serail' for the State Opera of South Australia. Most recently, Cheryl Barker had a sensational success as Violetta in 'La Traviata' at the Australian Opera in Sydney. She has appeared in concerts at the Wigmore Hall, Royal Albert Hall, St. John's Smith Square, Barbican Centre, Queen Elizabeth Hall (London), Spoleto Festival (Italy), Melbourne International Festival (Australia), Edinburgh Festival (Dublin), and Vienna (as part of the Mozart Bi-Centenial celebrations). Television and recordings: 'Madama Butterfly' (filmed for Belgium Television), Harry Enfields 'Guide to Opera' (CD & Video), 'La Boheme' (CD & Video). Future plans include: 'Maria Stuarda' title role (Reisopera Enschede), Salud in 'La vida breve' (TRM Brussels), Liù in 'Turandot' (De Vlaamse Opera), Butterfly in 'Madama Butterfly' at the Australian and at the English National Opera, and the 'Trittico' (Australian Opera). |
