Born in Lucca, after winning the Spoleto International Competition in 1965, he debuted in the same city in Gounod's Faust.

Since then, his career brought him to perform with success in the most important theatres in Italy and abroad.

At the Teatro alla Scala, he had the chance to sing under the baton of Claudio Abbado in Simon Boccanegra, Don Carlo, Aida, Macbeth, Boris Godunov, Oedipus Rex, L'amore delle tre melarance. Again at the Teatro alla Scala, he took part in the productions of Norma, La forza del destino, Fidelio, I masnadieri, Il trovatore, I lombardi with such conductors as Gianandrea Gavazzeni, Karl Böhm, Francesco Molinari-Pradelli, Georges Prêtre and Carlos Kleiber.

In Turin, he performed in Boris Godunov, I puritani, Aida and Don Carlo. In Rome, he took part in three different productions of Don Carlo, La Gioconda, Lucrezia Borgia, Donizetti's Faust, The Civil Wars, Semiramide, Un ballo in maschera and performed several times Aida at the Terme di Caracalla.

At the Teatro Verdi di Trieste he sang in such operas as Boris Godunov, Il trovatore, La forza del destino, Norma, Don Carlo, La Gioconda, I puritani, Semiramide, Macbeth, while at the Teatro di San Carlo di Napoli he performed in Aida, Don Carlo, La Gioconda, La forza del destino and Ernani.

Luigi Roni had the chance to collaborate also with the Teatro Comunale di Firenze, where he sang Turandot, Ernani, Aida, Lucrezia Borgia, I vespri siciliani, Un ballo in maschera, La vera storia, Macbeth and Guillaume Tell; at the Teatro La Fenice di Venezia he performed in Simon Boccanegra, Aida and Il trovatore, while in Parma he sang the role of Banquo in Macbeth, followed by I due Foscari and by his debut as Filippo II in Don Carlo.

Luigi Roni was often invited by the Arena di Macerata and by the Arena di Verona, where he sang in two productions of La Gioconda, in Aida, in La forza del destino, in I Lombardi alla prima crociata, in Il trovatore and in Andrea Chénier.

Abroad, his career brought him to perform with success in such important musical institutions as the Metropolitan (Aida and La Gioconda), the theatres of Berlin, Munich (Aida with Riccardo Muti), Vienna (Norma with Muti), London, Genève, Barcelona, Madrid, Washington, Dallas, Chicago, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Lisbon, Pretoria, Johannesburg, Athens, Sophia, Moscow and Tokyo, and in the festivals of Bilbao, Oviedo and Orange.

In France, he performed in Marseille, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Nancy, Avignon, Nice, Nimes, Montpellier and Paris. Highlights of his French engagements include Vera storia at the Opéra Bastille de Paris, two productions of Aida with Radio France, and Aida, Turandot and Verdi's Requiem under the baton of Michel Plasson at the Palais Omnisport of Bercy (Paris).

In 1998/9 season he sang, among others, in Don Carlo in Sevilla, in Tosca in Toulouse, in La forza del destino in Milan and in Turandot at the Festival Pucciniano di Torre del Lago.

1999/2000 bought him again to the Théatre du Capitole di Toulouse for La forza del destino, to the Teatro Regio di Torino to perform in Fedora and Rigoletto, to the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino for Aida and La fanciulla del West, this last sung also at the Opéra de Nice.

More recently, he obtained great success singing Tosca in Torre del Lago, Luisa Miller and Macbeth in Montpellier, Rigoletto in Toulouse and Luisa Miller in Bordeaux. He has just returned to the Teatro alla Scala and debuted at Ravenna Festival with a new successful production of Falstaff and to the Opéra de Montpellier to portray Otello, a work he has recently sung at the at the Opéra de Nice ed al Théâtre du Capitol de Toulouse. At the Teatro Regio di Torino, he has just performed in La forza del destino.

Highlights of his future engagements include La Bohème at the Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam, La fanciulla del West at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo and I maestri cantori di Norimberga at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.
