American tenor Bruce Fowler has rapidly become one of the most sought-after tenors on the international scene in some of the most difficult roles of the operatic repertoire. From New York to Berlin, the press has reported: Intense and also lyrically attuned.....his beautiful voice, with taste and great technical ability ... Fowler possesses one of the cleaner, sweeter voices on the scene today?. He entered the international spotlight in 1994 in the worldwide telecast of his victorious performance at the «Placido Domingo Operalia Competition», then he won the «Liederkranz Award», the «Baltimore Opera International Competition», Sullivan grants, the «Maguerite McCammon Award», the «Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions» and the «San Francisco Opera» awards.

His reputation in the Bel Canto repertoire was established first in the Italian theatres after a success as Don Narciso in Il turco in Italia with the Teatro Comunale of Bologna, followed by Ferrando in Così fan tutte at Teatro Bellini in Catania. He was invited to the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro for Armida with Renée Fleming and returned there for La cambiale di matrimonio. Other notable European productions include Il Conte di Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Teatro de La Maestranza in Sevilla and at the Teatro dell'Opera in Roma, Ramiro in La cenerentola with the Opéra de Nice and the Semperoper in Dresden, and Lindoro in L'italiana in Algeri with the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova. His Teatro alla Scala debut was Il turco in Italia conducted by Riccardo Chailly.

In North America he appeared in Così fan tutte at the Lyric Opera of Chicago and in La fille du régiment with the Opéra de Montreal, debuted at the Carnegie Hall in Rossini's Armida with Renée Fleming, returning there for La Cenerentola, and made his New York stage debut as Fenton in Falstaff . He has recently debuted in the heroic Bel Canto roles of Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor and of Gennaro in Lucrezia Borgia, and sang with the opera companies of Houston, Québec, Edmonton, Glimmerglass, Palm Beach, Cleveland, Toledo, Chautauqua and Perth.

In 1999-2000 season he had a personal triumph as Sir Riccardo Percy in Anna Bolena for the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki, followed by his debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in L'italiana in Algeri. In the US he appeared as Almaviva with the Michigan Opera Theatre and as Ramiro with the Baltimore Opera, and goes on to how as Idreno in Semiramide in Minnesota, followed by a return to Montreal for Il barbiere di Siviglia and La cenerentola in Cincinnati. More recently, he appeared as Don Ramiro in La Cenerentola at the Semperoper in Dresden and at the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki, as Conte d'Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Staatsoper unter den Linden, at the Chamber Opera of Thessaloniki, Hamburgische Staatsoper and Opéra National de Paris, and sang in the role of Rodrigo in La donna del lago at Salzuburger Festspiele.

An eloquent and engaging artist on the concert stage, Bruce Fowler's repertoire encompasses ten languages and includes works by Bach, Mozart, Berlioz, Britten and Janacek. He has concertized at the Wiener Staatsoper, at the Carnegie Hall, at the Konzerthaus in Berlin, at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, in Tanglewood, and at the Orchestra Hall in Chicago, and was recently heard in Berlin in Rossini's Stabat Mater and in recital at the Jordan Hall in Boston. In this season he adds to his repertoire Rossini?s Petite Messe Solennelle at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo.

Bruce Fowler's 1993 recording debut in Haendel's Messiah for Telarc was nominated for the Grammy Award. His discography also includes Rossini's Stabat Mater for Harmonia Mundi, Rossini's Armida with Renée Fleming for Sony Classical, Ibert's Angélique for Fonit Cetra, Telemann's Der Tag des Gerichts for Music of the Baroque and Weisgall's Six characters in search of an author on New York Records. He is native of West Monroe, Louisiana and currently lives in New York City.
