Bareza Niksa
direttore d'orchestra

In the season 2002/03, Niksa Bareza becomes chief conductor of the new production Freischütz and Elekra (Theodorakis) in his function as Generalmusikdirektor of the city of Chemnitz, as well as the premiere of the opera Das Treffen von Telgte, with which he also guests at the Dresdner Music Festival 2003. Furthermore, he conducts once again Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen, Der Fliegende Holländer and Elektra. Moreover, he returns as guest at the Staatsoper Hamburg, who engaged him for La Traviata and Pagliacci with José Cura. At the National Theatre Zagreb, he conducts the new production of Mozart's Idomeneo. Apart from his concert obligations in Chem-nitz, his engagements lead him to the Symphony Orchestra of the Croatian Radio Zagreb, to Sal-zburg, Munich, Frankfurt and Düsseldorf.

Besides the highly acclaimed performances of Richard Wagner's and Richard Strauss' works in Chemnitz, a sensational Salome-series with Inga Nielsen and Anja Silja and a celebrated per-formance series of Verdi's Ballo in Maschera with Michele Crider, both at the Staatsoper Ham-burg belong to the outstanding successes of the last seasons.

Niksa Bareza was guest at many important opera houses such as the Norske Opera Oslo, the Teatro Comunale Firenze, the Teatro Regio Parma, the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, the Deut-sche Staatsoper Berlin and the Teatro alla Scala Milano, where he conducted Götterdämmerung, Fidelio, Tosca, Manon Lescaut, Trovatore and a new production of Andrea Chenier. In concerts he appeared with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Mozarteum Orchester Salzburg and the Orchestra Sinfonica Arturo Toscanini.

Niksa Bareza was born in Split in 1936. At the Zagreb Music Academy Bareza studied composi-tion and conducting with Milan Sachs and Lovro von Matacic. For several years, he stayed in Salzburg for the summer months and attended the classes of Hermann Scherchen and Herbert von Karajan. To the Viennese conducting style and to the symphonic opus of Anton Bruckner he was introduced by Lovro von Matacic. Conducting a lot of contemporary music, Niksa Bareza was in touch with many composers like Orff, Messiaen, Dallapiccola, Malipiero, Petrassi, Shostakovich, Nono and Britten and conducted their works. From 1972 until 1975, Bareza conducted many op-era productions at the Leningrad Kirov-Theatre, from 1978 until 1981 at the Zürich Opera House and from 1981 until 1990 as chief conductor of the Grazer Philharmonic Orchestra.

The CD-recording of Il Campiello from Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, conducted by Niksa Bareza was awarded by the magazine 'Opera International' with 'Le timbre de platine'.
