Born in Oslo from Italian mother and Norwegian father, she studied in Rome at the conservatory of S.Cecilia where she took her singing diploma. Later she studied with Elizabeth Schwarzkopf, Hans Hotter and Peter Pears. After winning many competitions like the Mozart Wettbewerb in Salzburg, the Spoleto competition and the international singing competition of the Bavarian Radio in Munich, she started a big international career as concert and opera singer.She is regularly invited by the most important operahouses and festivals in the whole world as Teatro alla Scala (where with Riccardo Muti she has sung as Susanna in Nozze di Figaro, Nannetta in Falstaff, Constance in Dialoges of Carmelites, Vannella in Lu Frate Innamurato, Jemmy in Guglielmo Tell. Ceccato), New York Philharmonic (Le Martyr de Saint Sebastien with Kurt Masur), Chicago Symphony Orchestra (The Creation of Haydn with Solti), San Francisco Symphony Orchestra (Brahms Requiem with Blomstedt that has also been recorded for DECCA), Boston Symphony Orchestra (L'Enfant et Le Sortilege with Osawa), Orchestre de Paris (Mahler 2° and Beethoven 9° with Bychkow)............We ave here just remembered some of the important concerts and parts Elizabeth Norberg-Schulz has sung, but from her engagements we can see that she has been working with the most important conductors in the world: Boris Gudonov with Abbado in Salzburg, La Clemenza di Tito with Muti, and Die Frau Ohne Schatten and Falstaff with Solti also in Salzburg (Falstaff has been recorded for DECCA), Un Ballo in Maschera and Tourandot with Gatti in Chicago and CoventGarden, Die Zauberflote with Janowsky in Chicago (Die Zauberfloete has been recorded for Naxos), Falstaff with Osawa in Vienna, Idomeneo with Colin Davies, Guillome Tell with Chailly and Muti in La Scala, Oscar in Ballo in Maschera with Pappano. Let us also remember the tours with La Scala in Japan conducted by Carlos Kleiber in Boheme, by Muti in Falstaff and by Lorin Mazel in Tourandot, and the Japan tour of l'Orchestre de Paris with Bychov.Among her latest engagements we can point out Der Rosenkavalier of Strauss at The Metropolitan Opera of New York, The Zauberflote and Falstaff at Teatro Real of Madrid, Tamerlano of Haendel with Trewor Pinnok and The English Concert in Halle, London and Paris (it has been made a live recording and a DVD of this Tamerlano), Adina in Elisir and Zerlina in Don Giovanni both in Rome and in San Carlo of Napoli, Haensel and Gretel as Gretel in Chicago conducted by Mark Elder, her debut as Mimì in La Boheme in the Norwegian Opera, The Oslo Symphony Orchestra; New Year Concert with Manfred Honeck, Mozart Requiem with Temirkanov in Rome with the Santa Cecilia Orchestra as the final concert in the old auditorium, Der Wein and Mahler 4° with Jeffrey Tate and the Orchestra Nazionale of RAI.Her engagements for the next future will take her to Bologna with Daniele Gatti in Brahms Requiem,to the Megaron in Athens as Liù in Tourandot, in Glyndebourne as Mimì in La Boheme, in the Rome Opera and Oslo Opera as Micaela in Carmen, in Paris Theatre des Champs Elysées, with Haendels Xerses conducted by William Christie (there will bee made a CD recording live of the opera), as Elena in Cappello di Paglia di Firenze in Torino with Bruno Campanella and as Gilda with Leo Nucci as Rigoletto in Bologna conducted by Gatti. She has also worked with the major stage directors as Ronconi, Strehler, Pizzi, Miller, Wieck, De Simone, Zeffirelli, Goetz Friedrich, Ugo De Hana, Proietti, Martone, Richard Jones...... Her recordings are with companies as PHILIPS, DECCA , EMI RICORDI, BMG and others. Her recording of Lieder of Grieg got the Grieg Award from the Grieg Academy in Bergen and her recording of Brahms Requiem got the GRAMMY AWARD. She appears often in Lieder Abender with acompanists as Irwin Gage and Silvia Cappellini Sinopoli. She will receive on 16th June in Rome the prize Minerva 2003 for art, science and communication.
