The 1996 winner of the prestigious Richard Tucker Foundation Award, American baritone Dwayne Croft has established himself as a leading artist with prominent opera theaters and symphony orchestras throughout the world.@ Since joining the Metropolitan Opera's Young Artist Development Program in 1989, @Mr. Croft has become a favorite artist of Metropolitan Opera audiences. He has appeared in more than 200 performances of 22 roles at the Metropolitan Opera including performances of the title role in Billy Budd, Pelléas opposite Frederica von Stade in a new production of Pelléas et Mélisande, the title roles in Don Giovanni, Il barbiere di Siviglia and Eugene Onegin, Count Almaviva in the new Jonathan Miller production of Le nozze di Figaro, his creation of the role of Nick Carraway in the world-premiere of John Harbison's The Great Gatsby, Guglielmo in a new production of Cosi fan tutte, de Siriex in a new production of Fedora with Placido Domingo and Mirella Freni, Valentin in Faust, Sharpless in a new production of Madama Butterfly, Marcello in La bohème and Chorèbe in Les troyens. Dwayne Croft has participated in seven television broadcasts for the Metropolitan Opera including their productions of Billy Budd, Madama Butterfly and Fedora. On three occasions he has been invited to open the Metropolitan Opera season: in 1999 he appeared as Silvio in I pagliacci, opposite Plácido Domingo; in 1994 he also appeared as Silvio, opposite Teresa Stratas and Luciano Pavarotti; and in 1991 he was seen as Dr. Falke in Die Fledermaus, all conducted by James Levine and televised worldwide.@ Dwayne Croft begins the 2001-02 season with his return to The Washington Opera for performances as Guglielmo opposite his wife, soprano Ainhoa Arteta and his brother, tenor Richard Croft. The baritone then makes his debut with San Francisco Opera as Ford in Falstaff, a role he repeats later this season with the Metropolitan Opera. Other Met appearances include the title role in Il barbiere di Siviglia, the Theatre Director in Les Mamelles de Tirésias, and a reprise of his portrayal of Nick Carroway.@ During the 2000-01 season, Dwayne Croft returned to the Metropolitan Opera and the role of Pelléas, under the direction of James Levine. He added a new role to his Metropolitan Opera repertoire when he appeared as Giorgio Germont in La traviata, a role he repeated in the Met-in-the-parks concerts. Mr. Croft returned to Lyric Opera of Chicago for performances of the title role in Il barbiere di Siviglia before he essayed the role of Rodrigo, Marquis of Posa in Don Carlo in his return to The Washington Opera. The baritone's season concluded with his return to the Salzburg Festival and the addition of another Verdi role to his repertoire, Ford in Falstaff.@ Dwayne Croft is familiar to audiences throughout Europe. He made his debut with the Vienna Staatsoper as Count Almaviva followed by performances of Don Giovanni. His debut with the Salzburg Festival was also as Count Almaviva, and he returned the next two seasons for performances of Posa and to create the protagonist's role of Jaufré Rudel in the Salzburg Festival's world premiere of Kaija Saariaho's L'amour de Loin. Mr. Croft's first performances of Posa were with the Opéra de Paris, Bastille. The baritone was first seen with the Opéra de Paris in the title role of Eugene Onegin, and he later returned for performances of the title role in Don Giovanni. The role of Eugene Onegin was also the vehicle for his debut in Italy with Teatro la Fenice in Venice. Other successes in Europe include Mr. Croft's debut with the Grand Théâtre Municipal de Bordeaux in the title role of Don Giovanni and his German opera debut as Guglielmo with the Cologne Opera, after which he was immediately re-engaged for his signature role of Eugene Onegin.@ Dwayne Croft is well-known to audiences in North America. He appeared as Don Giovanni for his official debut with The Washington Opera in 1998. In 1995 the baritone made his unscheduled debut in Washington when he sang a matinee performance of Guglielmo at the Metropolitan Opera and boarded a private jet to Washington to appear that evening as Marcello, replacing an ailing colleague. Mr. Croft has appeared with Lyric Opera of Chicago as Figaro in John Corigliano's The Ghosts of Versailles, and his debut with Los Angeles Opera was in the title role of Don Giovanni. He appeared in this same role as well as the title role in Il barbiere di Siviglia with The Santa Fe Opera, and his debut with Baltimore Opera was in the title role of Eugene Onegin. His debut in Canada was with the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto in performances as Count Almaviva. The baritone's debut in South America was in his first performances of Don Giovanni with the Teatro Municipal in Santiago, Chile. Mr. Croft has appeared in Japan as Pelléas, opposite Frederica von Stade with Gerard Schwarz and the Saito Kinen Festival.@ Mr. Croft's German concert debut was as Scherasmin in Weber's Oberon with the Guerzenich Orchestra in Cologne, conducted by James Conlon and recorded for EMI. In addition to the EMI Oberon recording, the baritone has recorded the role of Lescaut in Decca's recording of Manon Lescaut with Mirella Freni and Luciano Pavarotti. He recorded Takemitsu's My Way of Life, for orchestra and baritone, with Philips Classics and the Saito Kinen Festival Orchestra, led by Seiji Ozawa. He appeared in London's Royal Albert Hall for a 'Pavarotti Plus' gala concert which was televised and recorded for Decca Records, and he returned to London for Royal Opera, Covent Garden's "Gold and Silver Anniversary Concert" honoring Plácido Domingo and recorded by EMI Classics.@ Dwayne Croft has appeared throughout the United States in a series of joint recitals with tenor, Paul Groves, and he has appeared in recital and concert performances throughout Spain and North America with his wife, soprano Ainhoa Arteta.
