| Born in Dresden, he made his debut at the Berlin State Opera in 1988 while still a student. |
| His repertory includes Rocco, King Marke, Pogner, Escamillo, Figaro, Don Giovanni, Leporello, Gurnemanz, Hunding, Sarastro, Ramfis and Philipp II. |
| He has appeared at all the major opera houses and concert halls in Europe (including the Royal Festival Hall and the BBC Proms), Japan, the USA and at Salzburg and Bayreuth. |
| Among his recordings are 'Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg', 'Fidelio', Mozart's Requiem, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Haydn's 'Creation' and 'The Seasons', 'Das Wunder der Heliane', 'Lohengrin' and 'Tannhäuser'. |
| He made his Royal Opera debut as Pope Pius IV ('Palestrina') and returned as Heinrich I ('Lohengrin'). His plans include 'Lohengrin' (Royal Opera), 'Tristan und Isolde' (Glyndebourne) and Gurnemanz (Metropolitan Opera, New York). He won the 2002 Musical America Vocalist of the Year Award. |
