Caproni Bruno
baritono

Northern Ireland native Bruno Caproni is rapidly becoming an important presence on the international opera scene. A member of the Cologne Opera since 1997, Mr Caproni's forthcoming schedule includes many exciting debuts such as La Bohème, and Il Trovatore with the Metropolitan Opera New York, Ernani with the Vienna Staatsoper, Rigoletto with the Vlaamse Oper, Nabucco with the English National Opera, Lucia di Lammermoor with the Dallas Opera and Aida with La Scala Milan. After a fantastic debut with the San Francisco Opera in Un Ballo in Maschera in Fall 1999, Mr. Caproni will return to San Francisco for Verdi's Un Giorno di Regno. In addition, Mr. Caproni recently made a highly successful debut at the Casals Festival, Puerto Rico, performing Rodrigo in Verdi's Don Carlo. Of his performance, one critic wrote, Baritone Bruno Caproni advanced the good argument to have the opera renamed Rodrigo, so magnificent was his interpretation on this ingrate role. He was lyric, intimate and soft when he was called for, but also heroic and powerful in the appropriate moments. The SanJuan Star, 1999 Bruno Caproni's exceptional talent are already well known to opera lovers in Germany. Prior to his appointment in Cologne, Mr. Caproni was the Principal Italian Baritone with the State Theatre Darmstadt, portraying numerous roles such as Eugene Onegin (Tchaikovsky), Marcello (Puccini, La Bohème), Michele and Gianni Schicchi (Puccini, Il Trittico), Renato (Verdi, Un Ballo in Maschera), Rodrigo (Verdi, Don Carlo), Germont (La Traviata), Carlo di Vargas (Verdi, La Forza del Destino), Rigoletto and Macbeth (Verdi). In his position as principal baritone with the Cologne Opera, Bruno Caproni had the opportunity to enlarge his repertoire with roles such as Amonastro (Verdi, Aida), Sharpless (Puccini, Madama Butterfly) and Enrico Ashton (Donizetti, Lucia di Lammermoor). He also reprised the roles of Germont in a new production of La Traviata, Marcello, Macbeth, Michele and Gianni Schicchi. Future appearances in Cologne include a new production of Rigoletto and Ford in Falstaff. Guest appearances across Germany have taken Bruno Caproni to opera houses in Karlsruhe, Wiesbaden, Mannheim, Essen, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf and Hamburg. Other European successes for Mr. Caproni have included performances with the Welsh National Opera in Bizet's Carmen and with the Royal Opera Covent Garden in the Fauré Requiem, Puccini's La Bohème, Mozart's Don Giovanni, Mayerbeer's Les Huguenots, Puccini's Turandot, Bellini's I Puritani and the title role in the 1847 version of Verdi's Macbeth. Bruno Caproni has worked with many distinguished conductors such as Sir Colin Davis, Sir Edward Downes, Danielle Gatti, Sir Bernard Haitink, Graeme Jenkins, Carlos Kleiber, Zubin Metha, Donald Runnicles and Jeffrey Tate. With Sir Edward Downes he also performed in concert version of Verdi's Attila (Ezio), Ernani (Don Carlo) and Nabucco. Bruno Caproni began his studies in Belfast with James Shaw and later at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester with the late Frederic Cox. Performances during his collage days included John Sorel (Menotti, The Consul), Sharpless (Puccini, Madama Butterfly), and the title role in Verdi's Rigoletto. He received the Vaughan Williams/Frederic Cox Award and the Ricordi Prize for Opera. Awards from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, the English National Opera and the Friends of Covent Garden enabled him to study at the National Opera Studio in London. During this period he made his debut with the Royal Opera Covent Garden, joining the company as Junior Principle.
