Studied London with Packer; Siena, and Geneva with Carpi. Début (as mezzo-soprano) London 1963, RCM (Gluck's Orfeo). Engaged as mezzo-soprano for Zurich O 1962; soprano début as Amelia ('Ballo'). London, CG, from 1963; Vienna and Bayreuth from 1966; New York, M, from 1972. Roles include Senta, Kundry, Brünnhilde, Leonore, Salome, Marschallin, Verdi's Desdemona, Tosca, Turandot, Dyer's Wife (S Francisco 1989; London, CG, 1992). Impressive in her dramatic commitment, and, at her peak, with a voice of golden tone.
