Dramatic tenor John Keyes has just made his debut with the South Australian Opera as Siegmund in their Ring cycle and as Canio in Pagliacci in Mannheim. He recently portrayed his first Samson for the Toledo Opera, and had a great triumph with the Nederlandse Opera in a new production of Die Walküre. He also recently performed Radames in Aida for the Tulsa Opera, made his debut at the Colon, Buenes Aires as Florestan in their season-opening Fidelio and performed his first Turridu and Canio in the New Israeli Opera's Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci. He sang the title role in Parsifal at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Munchen, a role which he has sung to acclaim throughout the world, from Houston to Amsterdam. He made his Italian debut in Venice to begin 1996-97, performing the Beethoven Symphony No. 9. Other recent engagements have included Salome at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Metropolitan Opera and the Frankfurt Opera. Mr. Keyes recently sang the role of Jean in Hérodiade with both the San Francisco Opera and the Opera Orchestra of New York, Erik in Der fliegender Holländer in Nice and the High Priest in Idomeneo at the Met. His concert performances have included the Beethoven Symphony No. 9 with the Houston Symphony and the Chicago Symphony in Ravinia, both under Christoph Eschenbach. He also performed Tristan und Isolde with the Pittsburgh Symphony, led by Lorin Maazel. He has appeared with Scottish Opera, the Hambugische Staatsoper, Opera Nantes, De Vlaamse Opera, the Nederlandse Opera, Opera de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, Michigan Opera Theatre and Tulsa Opera. Last season Mr. Keyes sang his first Pollione in Norma for Hawaii Opera Theatre, returned to Amsterdam for their Ring cycle and made his debut in Denmark with the Tivoli Festival as Siegmund. He performs this role at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam with the Rotterdam Philharmonic under Valery Gergiev in fall 1999. In 2000 Mr. Keyes will sing in Fidelio and a new production of Götterdämmerung in Mannheim. He is also preparing the role of Don José in Carmen in 1999, Calaf in Turandot and the title role of Otello with the Tokyo Philharmonic in 2000. |
