Teresa Stich-Randall sang Aida at the age of fifteen, while a student at the Hartford Conservatory. After Columbia University, she began her career in her native United States singing as a soprano in concerts. From 1949 to 1950 she sang in the Priestess in Aida and Nannetta in Verdi's Falstaff under Toscanini in broadcasts. She also sang in the American premiere of Bloch's Macbeth. In 1951 she won the Lausanne Competition and transferred her activity to Europe. In 1951-52 she sang at the Stadttheater in Basle. In 1951 she achieved fame when she sang the Mermaid in Oberon while swimming acrossa pool at the Boboli Gardens in Florence. In 1952 she was invited to the Staatsoper in Vienna, where she had distinguished success in the course of a long career. Her guest appearances in Italy were especially successful, including those at La Scala, the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, in Genoa and Turin, and at the Maggio musicale in Florence. She was also a great success at the Salzburg Festival (from 1952 to 1960 in concert, in 1960 in Frank Martin's Mystère de la Nativité) and in guest appearances in Switzerland and Germany. Stich-Randall took part in the Festival at for many years, from 1953 to 1972, playing many roles, and she had a distinguished career as a soprano in concert performances. In 1961 she sang at the Chicago Lyric Opera, where she had previously made a guest apppearance in 1955. Also in 1961 she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte. During her four seasons and seventeen performances there, she was also heard as Donna Anna in Don Giovanni. Her voice was admired for its security of tone and the ease of its production. She was especially eminent as a performer of Mozart.
