Ashley was born in Reading and studied singing at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with William McAlpine. Since graduating with a honours degree in music, he has performed a variety of stage roles including: Nemorino, L'elisir d'amore; Ernesto, Don Pasquale; Carlo, Linda di Chamounix; Ferrando, Così fan tutte; Pedrillo, Il Seraglio; Basilio and Curzio, Le nozze di Figaro; Male Chorus, The Rape of Lucretia; The Husband in Poulenc's The Breasts of Tiresias; the title-role in Gazzaniga's Don Giovanni; and Nanki-Poo, The Mikado. Ashley made his debut in 2000 with Glyndebourne Festival Opera, singing in the chorus and covering the role of Sellem, The Rake's Progress. He covered the role of Simon, The Last Supper, for Glyndebourne Touring Opera. He was also called upon to sing the role of John Millar Jnr. whilst covering in David Horne's Friend of People for Scottish Opera. Other operatic performance include: Fenton, Falstaff, for the London Opera Players, and creating the role of John Peter in Russell Pascoe's The Murder of Charlotte Dymond for Music Theatre Kernow. His work in opera has also enabled him to gain valuable experience in Education Projects with Welsh National Opera in schools in Wales and England.
On the concert platform, Ashley has appeared as a soloist at venues including The Barbican, St. John's, Smith Square, St. Martin's in the Fields and many others throughout the UK. Since leaving the Guildhall, he has sung tenor solos in most of the major concert repertoire. Solo performances include Rachmaninov's Vespers with the Corydon Singers under Matthew Best at Chester and Gloucester Cathedrals; Elgar's The Kingdom with the Southampton Philharmonia Orchestra and Chorus under David Gibson at Winchester Cathedral; and, on a lighter note, excerpts from West Side Story, Brigadoon and My Fair Lady with the City of Glasgow Symphony Orchestra under Iain Sutherland at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.
As well as his work in the UK, Ashley has worked with the composer Steve Reich, touring Europe and the USA performing and recording his new video opera, Three Tales.
Ashley completed the 2000/2001 course at the National Opera Studio, supported by The Friends of Covent Garden, and continues his studies with William McAlpine. He covered the role of Simon in The Last Supper last season at Glyndebourne.
