Doss Mark S.
basso

Bass-baritone Mark S. Doss began his musical studies primarily as an aid to his ambitions to become a Catholic priest, but was seduced by the opera world and through his studies with the bass Nicola Rossi-Lemeni, tenor Carlo Bergonzi, and baritone Walter Cassel, has emerged as one of the leading singers in the world today. He ends the current 2004/2005 season with performances of Alidoro in Rossini’s La Cenerentola at Teatro alla Scala – his third role there in the last 12 months. He will then open the 05/06 season singing Alidoro at Lyric Opera of Chicago.

He began last season as Amonasro in a revival of Théâtre de la Monnaie’s Aida, followed by Randolph in Lyric Opera of Chicago’s World Premiere of A Wedding, Méphistophélès in Oper Frankfurt’s Faust, and Argante in Teatro alla Scala’s Rinaldo. Upcoming Engagements will include Amonasro in La Monnaie’s Baden-Baden Tour of Aida, Escamillo in Carmen with Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Scarpia in Tosca with Opera Frankfurt.

During the 03/04 Mr. Doss made his Royal Opera debut as Amonasro, and also debuted at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona in Peter Grimes. He followed, to great acclaim, with the title role in Boito’s Mefistofele with Oper Frankfurt. Afterwards he sang Escamillo in his debut at Teatro alla Scala. In Concert, he appeared with the Seattle Symphony as the bass soloist in Bach’s Magnificat, and was heard with the Baltimore Symphony as the bass-baritone soloist in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony under the direction of Bobby McFerrin.

Highlights of the 02/03 and 01/02 seasons include Zaccaria in Nabucco with Oper Frankfurt, the Title Role in Handel's Giulio Cesare with Cleveland Opera, Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte with L’Opéra Théâtre de Nice, King Philip in Don Carlos with Boston Lyric Opera, and Escamillo in Carmen with the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. He additionally sang Mendelssohn's Elijah with the Cathedral Choral Society at the National Cathedral in Washington, D. C., and performed Mustafa in L’Italiana in Algeri with the Santa Fe Opera.
