Stefano Costa graduated in singing at the «G. Dima» University in Cluj (Romania), where he studied with Ionel Pantea. In 1980 he won the first prize at the «Singing Romania» competition and made several appearances in many radio and TV shows. In 1981 he also was the first prize winner at the «Maria Callas» Competition in Athens. |
After an engagement at the Sommerfestwochen of Luzern in 1981, he moved to Switzerland where he actually lives. He continued his studies in Italy with Fernando Bandera, Arrigo Pola, Carlo Bergonzi, Gianni Raimondi, in Germany with Rudolf Bauatz and Monika Pick-Hieronimi and in Switzerland with Ion Buzea. He worked in several opera-houses of Switzerland, Germany, Holland, Austria, the Czech Republic, South Africa, Italy, Israel, England, Romania, Egypt and Macedonian. |
His repertoire includes such operas as La traviata (Alfredo; Wiener Kammeroper, Teatro Verdi di Firenze), Andrea Chénier (title role; Hildesheim Stadttheater), Madama Butterfly (Pinkerton; Bloemfontaine, South Africa), Manon Lescaut (Des Grieux; Basel Theatre), Il trovatore (Manrico; Zürich Opernhaus, Luzern Stadttheater, Florence, Singapore, Baden Baden Festival, Prague Staatsoper), Carmen (Don José; Luzern Stadttheater, Israel tour with Beersheva Philharmonic, Skopje Spring Festival, Staatsoper of Klausenburg, Stadttheater in St. Gallen, Teatro Verdi di Firenze), Aida (Radames; Terme di Caracalla di Roma International Festival, conducted by Nello Santi, Teatro Verdi di Firenze, Aspendos Festival with the State Orchestra of Ankara, Kansai Opera, Hamilton Opera of Toronto, Cairo Opera House, Stadttheater of Würzburg ), Tosca (Cavaradossi; tour through Germany, Holland and England, Stadttheater in Bern), Nabucco, Don Carlo and Gounod's Faust. |
In recent seasons, Stefano Costa's international career brought him to New Jersey for a new production of Aida (Radames), to Taipei with the Taipei Symphony Orchestra to sing as Calaf in Turandot, to Brno in the main role in Don Carlo, to the Wexford Festival for Alessandro Stradella and to Singapore and Manila for new performances of Il trovatore. He has just taken part in a tour to Romania with Madama Butterfly, La Traviata and Tosca, and in a new production of Manon Lescaut (Renato Des Grieux) at the Torre del Lago Festival. |
His concert activity also includes Dvorak's Stabat Mater with the Münchner Philharmonic and Chamber Choir of St. Petersburg, Verdi's Requiem with the Minsker Philharmonic and with the Prague Philharmonic, Gounod's Messe Solemnelle with the Beersheva Philharmonic, Beethoven's Missa Solemnis and Symphony n.9, Mendelssohn's Elijah, Donizetti's Messa di Gloria and Credo, Janacek's Vater Unser and Liszt's Kronungsmesse. |
