Born in Naples in 1973, she attended her singing studies at the «San Pietro a Majella» Conservatory. She specialised in German Lied and in Bellini's repertoire under Elio Battaglia, and she attended a course on baroque music at the Ancient Music Center «Pietà de' Turchini» in Napoli under the guidance of Antonio Florio. She also took part in the Master class organized by the «W. Walton Foundation» in Ischia, followed by the performance of Falstaff by Lookhert and directed by Mariani, and attended the Accademia Rossiniana di Pesaro led by Alberto Zedda. She is presently studying singing with Elizabeth Smith and score practice with Danilo Lombardini. |
In 1995 she won the «Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition» in Philadelphia and made her debut in Verdi's Falstaff (Meg) and Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor (Alisa) at the Philadelphia Academy of Music under the baton of Marco Armiliato and with the staging of Tito Capobianco. |
In 1996 Luciano Pavarotti and Claudio Abbado awarded her the «Amadeus Prize» and a scholarship for further vocal training. In the same year she won the 28th «Toti dal Monte» International Competition in Treviso and made her debut in Cimarosa?s Il matrimonio segreto (Fidalma) at the Teatro Comunale di Treviso and at the Teatro Sociale di Rovigo at the end of the «Bottega» hold by Peter Maag and of the course under the guidance of Regina Resnik. |
She worked with Roberto De Simone at the reopening of the Sala Scarlatti di Napoli singing the first modern performance of Girolamo Abos' Stabat Mater. His sacred repertoire also includes Haydn's Nelson Messe, Missa in Tempore Belli and Vivaldi's Gloria performed at the Teatro Verdi di Sassari, Pergolesi's Stabat Mater in Naples, Pergolesi's Confitebur Tibi Domine and Messa di S. Emidio at the Festival dell'Aurora in Calabria. Prestigious were her recent appearances in the world première of Paisiello?s Miserere for the Teatro di San Carlo di Napoli and in a concert of works by Malibran/Pasta/Marcolini Volatine e roulades, i virtuosismi delle primedonne at the Music Center «Pietà de' Turchini» in Naples. |
In the last seasons, Gabriella Colecchia performed Zita in Gianni Schicchi at the Festival of Wexford and at the Dresden Semperoper, Nicklausse and the Mère d'Antonia in Les Contes d'Hoffmann at the Teatro Verdi di Sassari under the baton of Niksa Bareza, Mrs. Grose in Britten?s The Turn of the Screw at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari with Raina Kabaivanska and directed by Luca Ronconi, Meg in Falstaff at the Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova with Ruggiero Raimondi and the direction of Giancarlo del Monaco, Cuniza in Oberto, conte di San Bonifacio at the Macerata Opera Festival with Michele Pertusi, under the direction of Pier'Alli and the baton of Daniele Callegari. This last was broadcast live for Radio 3, by satellite (Rai Sat) and recorded for Fonè. |
She has recently sung in Bianca e Falliero in London, taken part in the Italian première of Die Ägiptische Helena at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, and returned to Catania to perform as Linetta in L'amour des Trois Oranges (conducted by Yoram David and directed by Gilbert Deflo) and as Rossweise in Die Walkürie, staged by Cesare Lievi. She opened the 2001/2 season at the Teatro Massimo Bellini di Catania as Isoletta in La straniera under the baton of Alain Guingal and with the direction of Alberto Fassini. She has recently obtained a great success singing in Il Cappello di paglia di Firenze at the Wiener Kammeroper, making her debut as Dorabella in Così fan tutte, co-production Teatro Massimo di Palermo - Malta Opera Houses with the State Orchestra of Malta and the direction of Mauro Avogadro, performing as Marchesa Melibea in Il viaggio a Reims at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro staged by Emilio Sagi, and in Cappuccetto rosso by Francesco D'Errico with the Is Jazz Ensemble and Paolo Fresu in Rome and Naples. During the current season, she has performed in Tancredi with Raul Gimenez and under the baton of Marco Zambelli in the theatres of Piacenza, Modena, Ferrara, Reggio Emilia, and at Opéra of Montecarlo. |
Her future plans include Carmen (Mercedes) at Teatro Verdi di Salerno, Montezuma by Francesco de Majo with the Baroque Ensemble «Cappella della Pietà de' Turchini» at the Baroque Festival of Aschaffenbourg (Germania), in Clermont-Ferrand and at the Teatro Mercadante di Napoli, Il trovatore (Ines) at the Teatro di San Carlo di Napoli, Norma (Adalgisa) on a Japan tour of the Teatro Massimo Bellini di Catania. |
