Czech contralto Jana Sýkorová, "Prague's Carmen", reprises this role on three stages this season, with the Prague State Opera, with the Janáček opera of Brno National Theatre and with Pilsen Opera. As a leading soloist with the Prague State Opera since 1999, in addition to Carmen, her performances have included the title roles of Carmen, Orlando, Ele-phant Man, Phaedra, Death, as well as Ulrica, Maddalena, La Cieca, Olga, Ježibaba the Witch in Dvořák’s Rusalka, Suzuki, Fenena, and Sesto, among others. From 2002 to 2008 Jana Sýkorová was a permanent guest soloist with Prague National Theatre featuring in the roles of Carmen, Kate in Dvořák’s Kate and the Devil and Panna Róza in Smetana’s The Secret, to name but a few.

Ms Sýkorová’s world and French stage premieres of Laurent Petitgirard’s opera Joseph Merrick dit Elephant Man won international acclaim in 2002 as did the subsequently released DVD (Marco Polo - Gramophone Magazine’s “DVD of the Month”, February 2005). Her guest operatic performances have included Grimgerde at Wagner Festival in Wels, Austria, Death in Berlin, Elephant Man and Maddalena in Nice (with Mo Marco Guidarini). In 2007 she made her debut with London Royal Opera House, Covent Garden as Maddalena in Verdi’s Rigoletto (a David McVicar production, with Renato Palumbo), where she returned to perform the role of Mercédès and to cover the title role of Bizet’s Carmen in 2008 (a Francesca Zambello production, with Daniel Oren). Her future opera schedule includes, in addition to Carmen in Prague and in Brno, Maddalena in Dijon (with Roberto Rizzi Brignoli).
Ms Sýkorová has appeared as a guest soloist on concert stage in Denmark, Norway, France, Great Britain, Italy, Germany, Spain, Poland, Slovakia and in Japan. She has performed Dvořák’s Stabat Mater with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra at Tokyo Suntory Hall and with the Prague Symphony Orchestra in Rome, Dvořák’s Requiem at Trondheim Festival, Martinů’s lieder cycle Nipponari in Glasgow (with Mark Stringer), Skryabin’s Symphony No 1 (with Eliahu Inbal), Massenet’s oratorio Marie-Magdeleine, Janáček’s Glagolitic Mass or de Falla’s El Amor Brujo. Particular mention should be made in regard to her 2009 performances of Brahms’ Alto Rhapsody with Bernhard Klee in Denmark and Dvořák’s oratorio St. Ludmila with Gerd Albrecht in Holland. Upcoming concerts include Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky with Gerd Albrecht or Janáček’s Glagolitic Mass with Sir Charles Mackerras. In 2010, she will perform Mahler’s Symphonies No. 3 and No. 2 “Resurrection”.

In addition to the DVD of Elephant Man mentioned above, Ms Sýkorová has recorded Dvořák's opera The Stubborn Lovers with Jiří Bělohlávek on CD (2004), Janáček’s masses with the Prague Philharmonic Choir and its newly-appointed choirmaster Lukáš Vasilek (2008, both Supraphon label) and several oratorios and song cycles for the Czech Broadcasting Authority, most recently Saint-Saëns’ Persian Night and Pallas Athène in his opera Hélène with Guillaume Tourniaire.
