Cynthia Makris has achieved an international reputation for her interpretations of some of opera literature's most interesting and challenging heroines. Her present repertoire has at its core the dramatic roles of the Italian repertoire, such as Turandot, Minnie in La Fanciulla del West, Verdi's Lady Macbeth and Abigaille, as well as Richard Strauss' Elektra and Salome.
Cynthia Makris' name is closely associated with Salome, which she has sung all over the world, including productions in Berlin, Tokyo, Strasbourg, Lisbon, Munich, the Australian Opera, the Scottish Opera, Hannover, Stuttgart, Helsinki, Philadelphia, and Rio de Janeiro.
Cynthia Makris´ portrayal of Lady Macbeth at the Savonlinna Opera Festival brought her international acclaim. Lady Macbeth was the role with which she made her debuts at La Scala and at the Teatro Colón. Her Covent Garden debut was as Abigaille.
Miss Makris has sung at La Scala, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, the Bavarian State Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the State Opera in Berlin, the Royal Opera in Stockholm, the Opéra du Rhin in Strasbourg, the Flemish Opera, the Welsh National Opera, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the Teatro Bellini in Catania, the Opéra de Normandie, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Opéra Comique, the Finnish National Opera, the Teatro Municipal in Santiago de Chile, the New Tokyo Opera, the Teatro Municipal in Rio de Janiero, the Semper Oper in Dresden, the Royal Opera in Copenhagen, and the Teatro Municipal in Sao Paolo.
RECENT AND UPCOMING:
Miss Makris is singing Norma, Salome, and the Kaiserin at the Finnish National Opera the first half of the 2005-2006 season.
In the spring of 2006, she will sing Abigaille at the Estonian National Opera and Turandot in Marseille.
As the Artist of the Year, she will be Venus/Elisabeth at the Savonlinna Opera Festival in the summer of 2006.
Future plans include a new production of Turandot at the Teatro Colón and her debuts as Strauss' Marschallin and Färberin.
