Born in Milan, Danilo Formaggia studied piano and simultaneously completed his classical studies attending the Faculty of Jurisprudence. He subsequently began his singing studies, specialising under the guidance of Alfredo Kraus and Magda Olivero. In 1998 he was the winner of the prestigious Enrico Caruso Prize. |
After his debuts in Paisiello's Le due Contesse and Cimarosa's I due Baroni at the Festival dell'Opera Buffa, Danilo Formaggia started a successful career, having performed in the major opera and concert houses in Italy and abroad. |
At the Palazzo dei Congressi in Lugano he debuted in La traviata, at the Teatro Massimo Bellini di Catania he portrayed his first Rigoletto (under the baton of Nello Santi); he sang in Il barbiere di Siviglia and in Don Pasquale in Malta, and experienced great success singing in La Bohème in Salerno (February, 1999; conducted by Janos Acs) and for the opening of the Teatro Chiabrera di Savona 1999/2000 season, under the baton of Bruno Aprea. |
Again in the 1999/2000 season he performed in Nina o sia la pazza per amore by Paisiello at the Teatro alla Scala, followed by Rigoletto in Oslo, Piccinni's Cecchina, ossia la buona figliola in Milan and Pavia and La traviata at the Verdi Festival and at the Hungarian State Opera of Budapest conducted by Rico Saccani. |
In Summer 2000 Danilo Formaggia made his debut in Seoul (Metropolitan Opera) with Lucia di Lammermoor. |
2000/1 season brought him to the Teatro Piccinni di Bari for Tigrane and Cecchina, ossia la buona figliola, to the Teatro Comunale di Modena to perform in La traviata and to the As.Li.Co. to debut in Falstaff. He subsequently sang in Die Zauberflöte at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia di Roma and took part in the Festival di Montepulciano, performing in L'elisir d'amore and Don Pasquale. |
Highlights of his recent engagements include Le maschere in Livorno, Pisa, Lucca, Ravenna, Mantova, Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali at the Teatro Politeama Greco di Lecce with Fabrizio Maria Carminati, Nina, o sia la pazza per amore with the Sagra Malatestiana di Rimini in Cattolica, Il barbiere di Siviglia at Teatro Pergolesi di Jesi, in Fabriano and Fermo, Il viaggio a Reims at the Teatro Politeama Greco di Lecce, L'elisir d'amore and the debut in Tancredi at the Teatro Verdi di Trieste. He also successfully took part in the world première of Poesie di Puccini (music by F. Mannino) at the Teatro Politeama di Palermo with the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana and of Il fantasma della cabina in Bergamo, Modena, Lucca and Messina. |

In addition to his vast operatic repertoire, Danilo Formaggia maintains an active schedule of performances with orchestras throughout the world. He sang Orff's Carmina Burana and Rossini's Stabat Mater at the Festival «Da Bach a Bartok», Mozart's Requiem in Croatia with the St. Petersburg Choir and Orchestra, Bach's Cantata del Caffè with the Pomeriggi Musicali di Milano, Chamber Arias by Bellini and Verdi at the Nuovo Auditorium di Milano and the 47th Festival Pucciniano di Torre del Lago. He also took part in La notte diffonde gli incanti at the Teatro alla Scala and at the Festival U. Giordano and in a concert of Verdi's arias in a new arrangement at the Teatro Dal Verme di Milano, as well as in several concerts at the Festival de Boucard in France, at the Festival di Castel Gavarno, at the Teatro alla Scala, at the Santa Cecilia di Roma Auditorium, at the Teatro Dal Verme di Milano. |
