When Bruno Aprea started his career as a conductor, he was already a well-known young pianist, both in Italy and abroad. |
His father, Tito Aprea, taught him piano and he studied conductorship with Franco Ferrara and with Seiji Ozawa at the Berkshire Music Centre of Tanglewood. |
The numerous international music festivals where he has conducted include the «Sagra Musicale Umbra», the «Festival dei Due Mondi» in Spoleto and the «Tanglewood Festival». In 1977 he won the international «Koussevitzky» Prize in New York. |
He has worked with many important orchestras in Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Czechoslovakia, Brasil and the United States. Apart from his symphonic activity, Bruno Aprea works intensively in the operatic field and has been invited by many important European theatres including the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, the Théâtre du Châtelet de Paris, the Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam, the Opéra of Montecarlo, the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, the Teatro Massimo di Palermo, the Teatro Petruzzelli di Bari. |
In past seasons he has been guest in some of the major US opera theatres, such as Philadelphia (Don Pasquale), Cincinnati (Lucia di Lammermoor), Baltimore (L'elisir d'amore), and in Tokyo, where he conducted Don Giovanni and Madama Butterfly. |
In last seasons Bruno Aprea conducted successes as Rossini's La pietra del paragone at the Festival of Martina Franca and La Bohème at the Opera North in Leeds (1993), Puccini's Le villi in Martina Franca (1994), Mascagni's Iris at the Wexford Festival, La Bohème in Padova and Rovigo with La Fenice di Venezia (1995), Madama Butterfly in Cape Town (1996) as well as in Novara and Savona (1998), Don Giovanni in Denver, Tosca in Savona and Don Pasquale in Cosenza (1997), La gazza ladra at the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele di Messina (1998). |
Recent seasons brought him on the podium of the Palm Beach Opera and of the Opera Giocosa di Savona (La Bohème), of the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples (Cavalleria Rusticana), Teatro Coccia di Novara (Macbeth), Teatro Pergolesi di Jesi (Domino nero), Teatro Verdi di Trieste (L'elisir d'amore). He has just taken part in a tour of Le Maschere organised by the Estate Teatrale Livornese to Mantova, Pisa, Ravenna, Modena and Piacenza. |
His repertoire includes also operas such as Orfeo ed Euridice, Werther, Il Cordovano by Petrassi, El Retablo di Maese Pedro. |
He currently teaches at the «Santa Cecilia» Conservatory in Rome. |
In 1992 he was appointed Principal Guest Conductor at the Cape Town Opera Theatre. |
