| Born in Sydney, Australia, he studied at the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music and at the Royal College of Music, London. In 1965 he has been Musical Director of the Sutherland-Williamson Grand Opera Company, then Artistic manager of the Vancouver Opera, from 1972 to 1976, and, from 1976 to 1986, Musical Director of the Australian Opera. In 1977 he has been awarded of the CBE charge (Commander of the British Empire) and of the AO (Order of Australia) one ; in 1989 he has been awarded of the Commandeur des Arts et Lettres de Paris. He has conducted in the most important of the worlds great opera houses: The Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden of London, the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, the Theatres of Hamburg, Munich, Barcelona, Paris, Rome, Chicago, San Francisco and many others in America and Canada, as well as in the Festivals of Stratford (Ontario), Edinburgh, Vienna and Maggio Musicale (Florence). He has recorded almost all his repertoire, as well as the videos of "Les Huguenots", "Adriana Lecouvreur", "The merry widow", "Dialogues des Carmelites", "Norma", "Die Federmaus", "Lucrezia Borgia", "Lucia di Lammermoor", "Lakme", "Trovatore", "Zauberfiote", "Die Czardasfurstin". |
