The child of a theatrical family, the conductor made his Bolshoi debut as a boy soprano of seven, in Dzerzhinsky's 'Quiet Flows the Don'. He studied conducting at the Moscow Conservatory and began leading performances for Soviet All-Union Radio and at the Bolshoi Theatre while still in his twenties. Chief conductor of the Bolshoi from 1963-65, Svetlanov was named artistic director of the Soviet State Symphony Orchestra in 1965, beginning a thirty-five-year association with that ensemble. He was dismissed in 2000, after culture minister Mikhail Shvydkoi criticized him for spending too much time conducting abroad.
