Maestri Ambrogio
baritono

Ambrogio Maestri was born in Pavia in 1970. He studied pianoforte and singing in his native city and subsequently he perfected his skills there with Umberto Grilli.

His magnificent voice and his great communication skills on stage led to the artist becoming one of the new stars in the international scene. This was what was reported in the national and international press (The Times in London, Il Corriere della Sera, The New York Times, La Stampa and others) following his sensational debut (March/April 2001) in the role of Falstaff at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and in the piccolo Teatro Verdi in Busseto, under the direction of Maestro Riccardo Muti who was among the first to notice Ambrogio Maestri’s great artistic talents following an audition held in Milan the previous year.

This interpretation of the role of Falstaff was one of the musical events of the “Verdi Centenary” and was commented on in all of the national and international papers. Also, for this performance, he was awarded with important prizes and official recognition.

Ambrogio Maestri is considered by the critics to be among the best baritones of his generation since his very first auditions with important maestros and theatre directors (Daniel Oren, Riccardo Muti, Placido Domingo, Renzo Giacchieri) which resulted in the baritone making his debut in various theatres (1999 at the Washington Opera, 2000 at the Teatro Verdi in Trieste, at the Arena di Verona, in Japan with the Teatro alla Scala). Since then Ambrogio Maestri has never ceased to receive offers of contracts from the most important opera theatres in the world.

These three years of intense artistic activity led to his debut in numerous important roles including: Monterone in Rigoletto at the Opera in Washington, Fra’ Melitone in La Forza del destino at the Arena di Verona, Giorgio Germont in La Traviata at the Teatro Verdi in Trieste, Don Carlo di Vargas in La Forza del destino at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Il Conte di Luna in Il Trovatore at the Arena di Verona and at the New National Theatre in Tokyo, Falstaff in Falstaff at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and at the Teatro Verdi in Busseto, Renato in Un Ballo in maschera at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and Amonasro in Aida at the Arena di Verona.

During the 2001/2002 Seasons, he made his debut in other important roles: Jago in Otello at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Lord Enrico Ashton in Lucia di Lammermoor at the Teatro Regio in Parma, the Teatro Comunale in Piacenza and the National Theater in Mannheim. In February 2001 he made his debut in Germany at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin in the role of Don Carlo di Vargas in La Forza del destino, where he received enormous personal success and an immediate invitation to return to perform in other productions.

In September 2001 he made his debut in Spain at the Santander Festival in the role of Il Conte di Luna in Il Trovatore and he subsequently performed in the title role of Falstaff at the Teatro Real in Madrid in February/March 2002 which was very successful with both the audience and the critics.

In January 2003 he made his debut at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples in the new role of Rolando in La Battaglia di Legnano which, once again, was very popular with the public and the critics.

In July 2003, Ambrogio Maestri made his debut at the Staatsoper in München in the role of Falstaff in Falstaff, conducted by Zubin Mehta, which was very successful. The German critics expressed themselves in outstanding terms: “The most important discovery since Pavarotti” and also, “The man who can do everything”, underlying his great musical, vocal and performing capabilities.

Again in 2003, he was extremely successful with the audience in the role of Nabucco in Nabucco at the Arena di Verona and, subsequently, in the role of Simon Boccanegra in Simon Boccanegra at the Teatro Regio in Turin for the inauguration of the 2003/2004 season. Apart from his great success with the public, the critics expressed themselves with enthusiastic comments: “he is an all-round baritone with a strong personality, with great stage authority, with a powerful but gentle voice, with an air of sarcasm. He is majestic and produces a complete, full sound. What a pleasure!” (Paolo Isotta, Il Corriere della Sera, October 9th, 2003); “Ambrogio Maestri is often an authoritative Simone, he sings with an intense and profound voice, and convincingly brings to life some of Verdi’s most bitter, pained or tragically weak characters.” (Paolo Gallarati, La Stampa, October 8th, 2003); “Ambrogio Maestri has a really beautiful voice which can be spread out at your will and always obtains great results. This is a new pennant to be focused on in the new collection of young singers” (Carla Moreni, Il Sole-24 Ore, October 12th, 2003).

In January 2004 he has debut with great success the role of RIGOLETTO to the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. Always in 2004 he will make his debut at the Vienna Staatsoper as Falstaff (conductor, Fabio Luisi); at the Covent Garden in London as Don Carlo di Vargas in La Forza del Destino (conductor, Antonio Pappano); at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York as Amonasro in Aida (conductor, Marcello Viotti) and to the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon as Simon Boccanegra (conductor, Zoltan Pesko).

These important debuts have been accompanied by enthusiastic critics, among which:
Kurier, 04/09/2004-Gert Korentschnig “The Italian baritone, discovered by Riccardo Muti, in the role of Falstaff he wins even the comparison with all the great….. Ambrogio Maestri owns a gigantic voice that he knows how to fabulously conduct, both in the acute ones is also in the mezzevocis. The Staatsoper doesn't have to lose an artist of this level.”
Wiener Zietung, 04/09/2004-Rainer Elstner “A natural predisposition he underlines on the stage in the Falstaff of the Ambrogio Maestri, to which could not be asked of better. With him nothing is dissatisfied. “
Financial Times, October 18, 2004, Andrew Clark “Maestri it is already the king of the baritones…. He knows how to unite words and music in a genial musical embrace…. I have a great desire to be able to feel soon his Boccanegra.”

In February 2005 is returned to the Staatsoper in Vienna for AIDA, welcomed with the usual great success of public and critics and, in February, the role of Alfio/CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA has debut to the Theater of the work in Rome. These some comments of the Austrian press:
Wiener Zeitung, 25/02/2005-Marie von Baumbach “Maestri it is certainly one of the most exceptional baritones of our time”
Neue Kronen-Zeitung, 25.02.2005-Oliver A. Lang “Ambrogio Maestri has been a solemn Amonasro from the strong personality.”
