Born in Moscow, during 1993/4 Maxim Mikhailov appeared at the Mozart in Schoenbrunn Festival as Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro, as Masetto in Don Giovanni, as Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte and as Osmin in Die Entfürung aus dem Serail. In 1994 and 1998 he was invited to Easter Festival in Salzburg for Boris Godunov under Claudio Abbado conducting. With the Nederlandse Opera he performed Ciaikovsky's Maseppa and ?ostakovich's The Nose. In 1997 he participated in the concert performance of Prokofiev's War and Peace at the Wiener Konzerthaus, under the baton of Pinchas Steinberg. Maxim Mikhailov made his debut at the Wexford Opera Festival in 1995 in Rimsky-Korsakov's May Night, returning there in 1997 as Miller in Dargomyjsky's Rusalka and in 1998 as Christiano in Zandonai's I Cavallieri di Ekebu. In 1996 he performed as Prince Khovansky in Musorgsky's Khovantchina at Theater Grislin (Nantes) and made his successful debut at the Royal Opera House-Covent Garden in London as Masetto in Don Giovanni (covering Leporello).

In 1997 Maxim Mikhailov appeared as both Warlaam and Schelkalov in Boris Godunov at the Houston Grand Opera. Next year he performed Golaud in Pelléas et Mélisande in Nantes (a role he performed later in Tallinn), made his debut at Wiener Volksoper as Sarastro, and returned to Covent Garden for Rimsky-Korsakov's Golden Cockerel. In 1999 he made his debuts with La Monnaie in ?ostakovich's Lady Macbeth of Mzensk, with Opéra de Paris in Stravinsky's Le Rossignol and Le Renard, conducted by James Conlon (recorded by EMI), and with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra as Prince Gremin in Ciaikovsky?s Evgenj Onegin (conductor R.Lloyd-Johnes).

Maxim Mikhailov began 2000 as Banquo with De Norske Opera (Oslo) and performed for the first time the title role in Boris Godunov in Nantes. Then he appeared at Herodias Atticus Festival in Athens as Fasolt in Goetz Friedrich production Das Rheingold, and made his debut with Finnish National Opera as Warlaam in Boris Godunov. Year 2001 he appeared at Opéra de Paris as Sourin in Queen of Spades and at Teatro Comunale di Bologna as Golova (il Sindaco) in May night by Rimsky-Korsakov, both productions under the conducting of Vladimir Jurowsky.

Year 2002 began with Bob Wilson/Antonio Pappano?s Aida production in La Monnaie as il Re. With Pasdeloup orchestra he performed Beethoven?s 9-th Symphony in Palais Pleielle, Paris. He made his debut at Gran Teatro Del Liceu, Barcelona in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk as the Pope and in Queen of Spades, and subsequently returned to Amsterdam for revivals of 'ostakovich's The Nose.

His plans include Samson et Dalila (on concert stage) as Old Hebrew in Strasburg, The Bartered Bride (Kecal) and Jolanta in Bologna. In 2004 Maxim Mikhailov will make his debut in San Diego, as Timur in Turandot, return to Covent Garden for A.Pappano/R.Johnes Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk production. The same year he will appear for the first time at Glyndebourne Festival in Gianni Schicchi and Miserly Knight.
