Among the more than 45 performed roles of the bass Vitalij Kowaljow – whose first profession was fireman in his native Ukraine – are Verdi`s King Philip in DON CARLO, Fiesco in SIMON BOCCANEGRA, Zaccaria in NABUCCO, Banquo in MACBETH, Ramfis in AIDA, Barbarossa in LA BATTAGLIA DI LEGNANO, Procida in VESPRI SICILIANI, Padre Guardiano in FORZA DEL DESTINO, Walter in LUISA MILLER and the title-role of ATTILA.
He made recordings as Colline in LA BOHEME (Deutsche Grammphon 2008), Francesco Pazzi in Leoncavallo`s I MEDICI (Deutsche Grammophon 2010) and as Commendatore in Mozart`s DON GIOVANNI (Deutsche Grammophon 2012)
The season 2012-2013 he starts in Teatro Liceu in Barcelona as Padre Guardiano in Veridi`s LA FORZA DEL DESTINO. Right after, he goes on Tour throughout Europe as King René in Tchaikovsky`s Opera IOLANTA, starring also Anna Netrebko in the title part.
2013, the year of Giuseppe Verdi`s anniversary, Vitalij Kowaljow starts at La Scala in Milano as Zaccaria in Verdi`s NABUCCO. Right after he will sing Zaccaria at the Royal Opera House in London. In Vienna at the Wiener Konzerthaus, in Munich at the Bavarian State Opera and in Berlin at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, he will perform the famous bass part of Fiesco in Verdi`s SIMONE BOCCANEGRA. At the San Carlo Teatro in Napoli he will sing the bass part in performances of the Verdi REQUIEM with Maestro Nicola Luisotti. He will return to the Arena di Verona to sing Zaccaria in NABUCCO again and he will perform Ramfis for a recording of Verdi`s AIDA. In the fall, he performs Zaccaria in NABUCCO again at the Vienna State Opera and he finishes the Verdi Year 2013 with the part of Padre Guardiano in LA FORZA DEL DESTINO at the Bavarian State Opera Munich.
He successfully performed the parts of Wotan and Der Wanderer in Wagner`s cycle DER RING DES NIBELUNGEN: 2009-2010 at the Los Angeles RING FESTIVAL, in the controversial production of Achim Freyer and 2010-11 as Wotan in DIE WALKUERE at La Scala di Milano with Maestro Daniel Barenboim.
At the Metropolitan Opera, he has sung Zaccaria in NABUCCO, Padre Guardiano in LA FORZA DEL DESTINO (the role of his Munich debut), Walter in LUISA MILLER, Ramfis in AIDA (the role of his Arena di Verona debut), Sarastro in DIE ZAUBERFLOETE and Oroveso in NORMA. He made his U.S. debut with Opera Orchestra of New York as Baldassare in LA FAVORITA.
Vitalij Kowaljow made news when he performed Procida in Les Vêpres Siciliennes under James Conlon on 10 days notice at the Bastille Opera in Paris, 2003.
He performed Zaccaria at the Bayerische Staatsoper München, Giorgio in I PURITANI at the Vienna Staatsoper and Gremin in EUGENE ONEGIN at Lyric Opera of Chicago and made a CD and movie as Colline in LA BOHEME.
The season 2008-2009 he performed Gremin in EUGENE ONEGIN at the Tanglewood Festival and both Fiesco in SIMON BOCCANEGRA and Pimen in BORIS GODUNOV with San Francisco Opera, his debut as Wotan as well in RHEINGOLD as in DIE WALKUERE at Los Angeles Opera with director Achim Freyer.
The season 2009-2010 he returned to LA Opera for his debut as Der Wanderer in SIEGFRIED and he performed Wotan and Der Wanderer in LA Opera`s Ring Cycle Festival.
The season 2010-2011 he performed Wotan in WALKUERE in the season opening of La Scala in Milano, Zaccaria in NABUCCO in Munich as well as in the Arena di Verona, Raimondo in LUCIA Di LAMMERMOOR in Torino and concerts for a CD-recording with Deutsche Grammophon as Commendatore in DON GIOVANNI in Baden-Baden.
The season 2011-2012 brought Don Alfonso in LUCREZIA BORGIA in San Francisco, Frere Laurent in ROMEO ET JULIETTE in Los Angeles, Fiesco in SIMON BOCCANEGRA in Los Angeles, concerts of Shostakovitch „Song of the Forest“ with Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome and Walter in LUISA MILLER at La Scala in Milano.
